SEATTLE - The Husky baseball team (28-19, 12-12 Pac-12) is in familiar territory as they make another late-season push for a NCAA Regional invite. They are peaking at the right time by winning five-straight, 11 of their last 13 games. Last season, the Huskies won each of their last five series' to earn an NCAA bid and make a run to their first College World Series.
UW's RPI is at 68 after winning Monday, so playing the No. 2 RPI and No. 1 overall ranked UCLA Bruins (42-8, 19-5) will go a long way in helping their post-season resume. For good measure, the Huskies end the year by hosting No. 36 RPI ranked Cal.
This weekend's action will by carried by the Pac-12 Network with Jim Watson and Wes Clements providing the commentary. SERIES HISTORY VS. UCLA
The Bruins hold the all-time series advantage over UW, 49-24, but the Huskies have won each of the last three season match-ups, the longest streak ever for UW. The Huskies dropped game one of the series last season before winning game two, 13-6, and walking off with a 6-4 win in 11 innings thanks to a Joe Wainhouse home run. The last time the teams played in Los Angeles, UW won the first two games to clinch their first road-series win over the Bruins since 2005. The only time UW won back-to-back series at UCLA was 2005 and 2003. Coach Lindsay Meggs, who played for UCLA from 1980-83 and was Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 in 1983, is 8-19 against his alma mater since taking over at UW in 2010. He started 0-14 against the Bruins before winning the final game of the 2014 series. Since that 0-14 stretch, he is 8-5 against the Bruins.Β
NOTEWORTHY
β’ UW vs. No. 1: The Huskies faced Oregon St when they were No. 1 in 2018 and went 1-2 against the Beavers. They also played OSU in 2017 when they were No. 1 and likewise, went 1-2 against them.
β’ Keeping Pace With 2018: Last year through 47 games the Huskies were: 25-22, 15-9 in Pac-12. They would go on to win their next five games -- sweeping Utah and winning the first two games vs. No.2 Stanford, before losing the finale to end the season 30-23, 20-10 in Pac-12.
β’ Kahle Walks Towards History: With six games left in the season, Nick Kahle is tied for the UW single-season record with 56 bases on ball. His next walk will break the record he shares with Chris Magruder (1998).Β
β’ Ward - Man Of Steal: Braiden Ward currently leads the Conference in stolen bases with 24, a year after leading with 19 in 2018. He is trying to become the first Pac-12 player to lead in consecutive years since Arizona's T.J. Steele in 2007-08. The last Husky to lead in consecutive years was Chris Magruder (1997-98).
β’ 'House Homers: On Monday, Joe Wainhouse launched his 10th home run of the season. He is the first Husky with 10+ homers in back-to-back season since Kyle Conley (19 in 2009 and 2008), who is also UW's all-time career leader with 42. 'House has 29 total to rank 8th all-time on the UW top-10 list (7th, 30 by Kevin Miller).
β’ Petrie Peaking: Since being inserted as a starter in the outfield seven games ago on May 4, Michael Petrie has went 8x25 (.320) with 7 RBI and 5 runs scored. Prior to that, Petrie had made just four career starts over two seasons and has served as the primary backup catcher to Nick Kahle.
β’ Team Strikeout Rankings: UW pitchers have recorded 456 strikeouts this season, the sixth most in UW single-season history. They could pass fifth through second this weekend: 457 (2006), 460 (1998), 463 (2003) and 470 (1997). The team record is 498 in 2004.
β’ 50K Note: The Huskies and UCLA are the only teams in the Pac-12 that have five pitchers who have recorded 50 or more strikeouts. It is the first time in UW Baseball history that they have EVER had five pitchers record 50 or more K's. All five Huskies rank in the Pac-12's top-20: Josh Burgmann (98, T1st), Chris Micheles (73, T8th), Stevie Emanuels (62, 17th), Jordan Jones (61, 18th) and Jack Enger (59, 20th). David Rhodes has 44 and could join the list.
β’ Academic Recognition: Senior Mason Cerrillo was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team. He boasts a 3.69 GPA and is majoring in public health and environmental science.Β
β’ Approaching 2,000 wins: The 2019 season is the 119th year of Husky Baseball. The Huskies entered the year needing 32 wins to reach 2,000 in program history.Β
β’ Starter Wins: All three Husky starters picked up victories during the team's sweep of Utah. Prior to that, UW starters had only one win since March 23 β Jordan Jones May 4 at WSU β a span of 23 games.
β’ Experienced Pen: Β The Huskies definitely have some experience in the bullpen with three relievers having made 50 or more appearances in their careers: Chris Micheles (65), Stevie Emanuels (64) and Leo Nierenberg (57). Micheles is the first to crack to UW career top-10 list (see page 3) with the other two well on their way.
β’ Jones Top-10: Jordan Jones is on several UW career top-10 lists, ranking 7th all-time with 191 strikeouts, 6th in starts (41) and 10th in innings pitched (254.2). The lists are on Pg. 3 of the notes.Β
β’ Jones Milestones: Junior Jordan Jones needs nine strikeouts to become the sixth player in UW history to go 200/200 in both strikeouts and innings pitched.
β’ Kahle Starting Streak: On April 30, catcher Nick Kahle made his 100th consecutive start. He has started 108 games straight - 103 times at catcher, four times at designated hitter and twice in left field. Β
β’ Non-Stop Shortstop: Ramon Bramasco has played all but thee innings of all 43 games this season -- all at shortstop. Bramasco has only been replaced in two games all season.
β’ Ain't No Bull From The Pen: The UW bullpen has been lights out in 2019. They have combined for a 16-6 record with a 3.55 ERA, recording 238 strikeouts in 185 IP for a 11.6 K/9 average.Β
