September 05, 2019 | Men's Soccer
The No. 13-ranked University of Washington men's soccer team (2-0-0) heads to Michigan for a pair of non-conference matches this weeks. The Huskies take on No. 16 Michigan State (0-0-2) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. PT) before heading to Ann Arbor to face Michigan (1-1-0) on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET (3:00 p.m. PT). The matches mark the start of a four-game road trip for Washington—the longest since 2012.
Quick Strikes
• Washington won a pair of matches to open the season last week, beating No. 18 Denver 2-1 on Friday and the University of San Francisco 4-0 on Monday.
• The wins extend the Huskies' unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1) dating back to last season. It's the team's longest since an eight-match unbeaten streak (4-0-4) spanning the 2014-15 season.
• The Huskies' have allowed just one goal over their last 666 minutes going back to 2018.
• Head Coach Jamie Clark earned his 100th win at UW in the Huskies' win over Denver. He is 101-42-20 (.681 winning percentage) as he begins his ninth season with the Huskies and is the third coach in program history to win 100+ games (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105).
• Junior Blake Bodily and sophomore Gio Miglietti each collected two goals and an assist over the first two matches to lead the team in scoring.
• Washington closed out the 2018 season strong, finishing with a 4-0-1 record in its final five matches while outscoring its opponents 8-0 over that stretch.
• UW is making its first regular-season trip to Michigan this weekend. The Huskies have only faced each of its opponents once before. Washington battled Michigan in 2003, beating the Wolverines 3-2 in the Marquette Invitational. The Huskies suffered a heart-breaking loss at Michigan State in the 2014 NCAA tournament, playing to a 2-2 draw but losing in PKs.
The Michigan State Spartans At A Glance
The Spartans are a perennial NCAA power, posting 20 NCAA tournament appearances including six of the last seven. Michigan State is 40-14-9 overall over the last three seasons including a 23-4-7 record at home during that stretch. This season, the Spartans were ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, but dropped to No. 16 ahead of this week's matchup with UW.
The Spartans opened the season with a pair of draws, playing to a scoreless tie at home against Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Friday, then posted a 1-1 draw against Florida Gulf Coast on Monday. Michigan State snapped a 199 minute scoreless streak to open the season by netting a goal in the final minute of regulation against FGCU before settling for the tie.
Series History vs. Michigan State
This is just the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The only other matchup came during the third round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament–and it was a thriller. Washington scored a pair of goals in the second half to go up 2-0 in the 73rd minute. But after an own goal got Michigan State on the board, the Spartans would tie the game with a shot in the 88th minute. After playing to a tie after two overtime periods, the teams headed to a shootout where Michigan State held on to advance 4-3.
The Michigan Wolverines At A Glance
The Wolverines are off to a 1-1 start through the early season, playing the same two opponents as their in-state rivals in East Lansing. Michigan were stunned by Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 as the visitors netted a goal in the 89th minute for the upset. The Wolverines rebounded with a 3-1 win over Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Monday, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the match to pull out the victory.

Difficult Road Ahead
Washington is beginning its first road trip of the year in Michigan this week–the start of a four-game road trip. The four-game trip is the longest since 2012 when UW played five-straight away from home. The Huskies have posted a 13-13-1 record away from home the last three seasons and are 25-9-1 at home.
Blake and Gio Start Strong
Junior Blake Bodily and sophomore Gio Miglietti have been on fire offensively for the Huskies thus far, each scoring twice and adding an assist in the early going. The pair has combined to have a hand in five of UW's six goals on the season.
Bodily, a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and MAC Hermann Trophy watchlist pick, scored just two goals in an injury-plagued 2018 season, but still managed to find a spot on the All-Pac-12 team. Meanwhile, Miglietti appeared in just five matches at the end of last season, playing a total of 129 minutes. His goal in the 6th minute of the opener vs Denver was his first collegiate goal.
Bodily Bringing In The Honors
Bodily was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list to start the year (awarded to the top college soccer player), becoming the first Husky since Cristian Roldan to earn that honor. In addition, Bodily was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and earned preseason All-America honors from Top Drawer Soccer (3rd Team) and College Soccer News (2nd Team).
Bodily, a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 pick, scored two goals with four assists in an injury-plagued 2018 season after tallying three goals and a team-best eight assists en route to earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2017.\
Fowler in Goal
Freshman netminder Sam Fowler earned his first collegiate start in Washington's 4-0 victory over San Francisco on Monday. In doing so, Fowler was just the second freshman to make a start in goal for the Huskies since 2002, following Spencer Richey (2010) and Chris Eylander (2002).
Fowler, a Sounders Academy product, has seen time with the USL's Tacoma Defiance and also earned several call-ups with the US youth national teams.
Teves Named to National Team of the Week
Sophomore Dylan Teves earned an impressive honor this week, being named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 1. Teves, who was a preseason All-Pac-12 pick, recorded assists on both of Washington's goals in its 2-1 win over Denver on Aug. 30. The sophomore appeared in all but one match for the Huskies as a true freshman in 2018, scoring five goals with two assists.
Soto Earns Freshman Honors
Freshman Christian Soto earned an impressive honor this week, being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Best Freshman XI Team. Soto comes to UW after playing for Crossfire FC with Husky teammates Charlie Ostrem and Ethan Bartlow and earned a USBNT call-up with the U17 National Team Camp in 2016.
Preseason All-Pac-12 Coaches Picks
The Huskies saw three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team: junior Blake Bodily and sophomores Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves. In addition, UW was picked to finish second by the Pac-12 coaches, just six points behind Stanford and two points ahead of Oregon State.
Clark Wins #100 at UW
Jamie Clark picked up his 100th win at UW as the Huskies beat No. 18 Denver 2-1 in the sesaon-opener on Aug. 30. With the victory he becomes the third coach in program history with at least 100 wins (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105). As he enters his ninth season on Montlake, Clark is 101-42-20 (.671 winning percentage), with UW having won at least 12 matches in seven of eight years at the helm.

Kyle Coffee, Quentin Pearson and Blake Bodily were selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team while Scott Menzies earned second-team honors. Corban Anderson and freshmen Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves received honorable mention recognition.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington found success when scoring the first goal of the match in 2018, going 12-1-0 when finding the back of the net first. (The lone loss was the 3-2, 2 OT loss vs Stanford.) They continued that pattern in the 4-0 win over San Francisco in the second match of 2019.
The bigger story, though, was that after allowing the opening goal against Denver, the Huskies pulled out the victory, marking the first time since Oct 1, 2017, Washington won after allowing the first goal. The Huskies had lost their last nine matches when surrendering the first goal.
In the Rankings ...
Two wins for Washington in its first week jumped the Huskies up in all four polls. UW was the biggest mover in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches poll, going from receiving votes to No. 13.
