Washington Picks Up Big Road Win, Downs Michigan State 1-0
September 06, 2019 | Men's Soccer
EAST LANSING, Mich. --- Redshirt sophomore Lucas Meek scored his first collegiate goal at the end of the first half and the Washington defense made the goal stand up as the No. 13 Huskies picked up a big 1-0 road win over No. 16 Michigan State on Friday night.
Washington improves to 3-0-0 on the season with two of those victories coming over teams ranked in the Top 20. In addition, the Huskies have allowed just one goal this season—a quick strike in the first minute of the season-opener, giving Washington a 269-minute shutout-streak.
"What a game!" said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "I thought we came in and played very well in the first half and could've been up by two or three. We were never going to be able to control the whole game against a very good Michigan State side, so it was great to weather the storm when they were chasing the game."
Meek, who had played a grand total of 14 minutes in two games coming into tonight's match, got an easy tap-in finish to an open goal in the 43rd minute to get UW on the board. The play began with Meek leading a break at midfield, sweeping the ball to freshman Jayson Baca, who tapped the ball over to sophomore Dylan Teves. Teves, then carried the ball a bit before slotting it to freshman Imanol Rosales who slipped behind the MSU defense just inside the box. The keeper came out to try and stop Rosales 1v1, but he slipped the ball to the right side of the goal where Meek was waiting to tap it into the wide-open net.
Teves records his third assist of the season, besting his total of two recorded in his rookie campaign. Rosales picks up his first collegiate point with the other assist on the play.
The goal came less than a minute after it looked like Washington got the first goal of the match, but saw it waived on a questionable offsides call. The goal was a solid strike on the left side of the box from Rosales, but Gio Miglietti, who passed the ball over to Rosales, was ruled to be in an offside position.
Washington dominated the first half, holding a 6-1 shot advantage with Michigan State's lone shot coming with 12 seconds left in the period. In the second half, the Spartans pressed for the equalizer, but the Huskies' defense held strong as Michigan State recorded eight second-half shots including three on frame.
UW had a couple of quality chances in the second half including a crack from just outside the box by sophomore Charlie Ostrem in the 83rd minute, which forced the MSU keeper to make a sprawling save.
Washington goalkeeper Bryce Logan recorded his second win of the season and first shutout, making three saves including an impressing leaping save off a free kick in the 77th minute. The keeper was playing near the edge of the six-yard box as the free kick from the left side sailed toward the upper V on the far side. However, he was able to get a hand on it and push it over the bar. He would make another solid save on a shot from the top of the box off the ensuing corner kick, but really wasn't tested again the rest of the match.
The Huskies have now allowed just one goal over the course of the last 756 minutes—an eight-match stretch dating back to last season.
"That's a great win against a top team," said Clark. "I have no doubt Michigan State will go on and win a lot of games this season, so come tournament time this one might be a game we hang our hat on."

What amazing work by the Washington attack to score the lone goal of the match. Meek begins the run and finishes for his first of the season while Teves gets his third assist and Rosales his first collegiate point.
