Middle of the Order Leads Washington to Road Victory at Portland
March 07, 2023 | Baseball
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Huskies kept their winning ways going on Tuesday, earning a midweek road victory at Portland, 6-2 at Joe Etzel Field.
Starter Sam Boyle picked up his second win, delivering four shutout innings with just one hit and walk walk allowed, striking out five. Josh Emanuels provided 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out the side in the eighth, and Case Matter finished things off in the ninth.
Both teams had chances to take an early lead in the first but a hard luck double play for the Huskies left the bases loaded for the Huskies and Boyle was able to pitch around a leadoff Pilot triple.
After both sides went down in order in the second and third, the Dawgs went to work to grab the lead in the fourth. Coby Morales singled with one out and AJ Guerrero followed with a double to right-center. Both came around to score as Michael Snyder dropped a single into center and Sam DeCarlo drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0.
Will Simpson sent a missile into the trees in left field to tack on a run in the fifth and Michael Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Michael Snyder and bring the score to 4-0. The Pilots answered with a pair in the home half closing the inning 4-2 in favor of the Huskies.
Morales helped the Dawgs respond immediately, driving a single up the middle in the sixth to drive home Simpson and get one of the two runs right back.
Sam DeCarlo's sacrifice fly in the ninth extended the lead to four for UW. The Pilots brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Matter slammed the door shut to lock up the win for the Huskies.
