Huskies Fall in 15-12 Slugfest to Oral Roberts
June 03, 2023 | Baseball
UW starters Kiefer Lord took the loss on the mound, falling to 6-6 on the season.
The Huskies came out of the gates flying, posting seven runs in the first inning. Will Simpson spearheaded the offensive onslaught, legging out a one-out triple to center. The slugger scored on AJ Guerrero's sac fly. Johnny Tincher put two more on the board, crushing a two-run homer to left.
McKay Barney dropped an RBI single into left to make it 4-0 and Sam DeCarlo capped things with another big fly, dropping a three-run job into the bullpen in left.
Tincher added another run in the second on an RBI groundout, putting the Huskies up 8-0 after two complete.
However, that's when things went awry for UW. ORU punched back with a pair of home runs in the third to cut the lead in half at 8-4 and scored three more times in the fourth to make it 8-7.
The Golden Eagles added five more in the fifth and what was once a comfortable lead had suddenly been replaced by a four-run deficit.
The Huskies didn't back down. DeCarlo led off the sixth with a solo bomb to left, his second big fly of the game. Two pitches later, Cam Clayton slugged a solo homer into the bullpen himself, cutting the ORU lead to 12-10.
ORU drew a run back in the seventh but Washington went right back to work in the bottom half stringing together a walk and three straight singles, the final RBI knocks for Simpson and Coby Morales, to make it a one run game.
The Golden Eagles had an answer once again when their turn came up. ORU led off the inning with a solo home run to left and went on to tack on another run, extending its lead to 15-12.
Having battled back all night long, the Huskies couldn't muster another effort, setting up a rematch with Dallas Baptist in an elimination game Sunday at Noon PT in Stillwater.
