February 28, 2025 | Baseball
LAS VEGAS – Washington put up six runs in the seventh inning, including a grand slam from AJ Guerrero as the Huskies fell in a 9-10 battle against No. 15 Texas on Friday evening.
Washington falls to 3-7 on the season while Texas moves to 7-1.
The Huskies were down 9-1 at the end of the sixth inning and nearly completed the eight-run comeback. After six runs in the seventh, Washington added two in the eighth to pull within one but couldn't find the game-tying run.
AJ Guerrero and Cooper Whitton provided six combined RBIs and each hit their first home run of the season. Guerrero's grand slam gave him the first four-RBI game for a Husky this season.
The senior left fielder's homer also brings his career number to 34, putting him in sole possession of fifth on the Huskies all-time list. He's two home runs away from fourth where Will Simpson (2020-23) sits with 36.
Eight of Washington's nine batters collected at least one hit on Friday, with three multi-hit games coming from Sam DeCarlo (2), Casen Taggart (2), and Cooper Whitton (3). Malakhi Knight also recorded a hit and an RBI after making his first start since Feb. 17 against Saint Joseph's.
The nine runs from Washington are the most Texas has given up in a game this season. Before Friday night, the Longhorns were allowing just 2.57 runs per game.
Max Banks earned the start against the Longhorns fanning eight batters, one shy of his Washington-best mark (9 vs. Kansas State). He allowed seven hits and seven runs during his 5.1 innings of work before he was replaced by Sawyer Parkin in the sixth.
Parkin finished off the final two-thirds of the sixth before Gunnar Nichols took over in the seventh. Nichols threw 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, one run, and two walks.
Josh Emanuels closed out the game for the Husky staff, pitching 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday against Illinois at 12 p.m. Reilly McAdams will start against right-handed pitcher Ben Plumley.
