March 01, 2025 | Baseball
Β
Washington moves to 3-8 on the season while Illinois improves to 6-3 on the season.
Β
The Huskies got the bats going early, scoring the first four runs of the game including three in the opening frame.
Β
Hitting leadoff for the first time this season, AJ Guerrero got his first of three hits in the bottom of the first. Batting second, Colton Bower immediately brought Guerrero home with a double to right field.
Β
It was one of two doubles and three hits for Bower, who played as the designated hitter while Colin Blanchard suited up as catcher. Bower added a stolen base, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Β
Blake Wilson provided an RBI triple in the fifth inning, sending home Braeden Terry while collecting Washington's first three-bagger of the season. The fifth inning featured two more runs, courtesy of a two-run shot by AJ Guerrero to right field.
Β
In addition to his first inning single and his home run, Guerrero also collected a double on Saturday. He's now batting a team-high .367 and one home run shy of fourth place on the Washington all-time home run list.
Β
Casen Taggart had three hits out of his four at bats, two of which brought in a run. Taggart now has four multi-hit games this year, including two with three knocks.
Β
Sam DeCarlo recorded two hits, getting his second multi-hit game this season.
Β
Reilly McAdams earned the start for Washington, pitching 4.0 innings to go along with two strikeouts and two runs allowed. Isaac Yeager pitched in relief first, tossing 1.1 innings while allowing five runs and striking out one.
Β
Bradley Gilbert finished off the sixth inning, pitching 0.2 innings while fanning one batter. Peysen Sweeney took over for the seventh and eighth, striking out three batters while allowing one run before Jase Evangelista pitched the ninth with one walk, one strikeout and no runs allowed.
Β
Illinois left 14 batters on base in the game, thanks in part to strong play from the Washington infield. The Huskies turned two double plays in the game, both of which ended the inning for the Illini batters.
Β
Despite the defensive effort, Illinois used a six-run sixth inning to tie the game before taking the 10-9 lead in the seventh, the scoreline that held through the ninth.
Β
Washington returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. to face Texas Tech in the final game of the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic.
