The Huskies improve to 8-9 on the season while the Pilots fall to 5-12.
Β
Tuesday's game featured more offense than last week's 3-0 bout with the Pilots as Washington had four extra-base hits, including three home runs. The Huskies had 13 hits in total during this go-around with Portland, more than double last week's UW hit total (6).
Β
Washington's used two homers in the third inning, starting with the first career homer for Jackson Hotchkiss, to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Colton Bower provided the second solo shot of the inning, his team-leading fourth long ball of the season.
Β
Justin Tims opened the game on the mound in his second career start and threw 3.0 scoreless innings, including a career-high five strikeouts.
Β
Portland got on the board in the fifth inning, putting up five runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. The Pilots held a 5-3 advantage going into the seventh inning until the Husky hitters took over.
Β
Malakhi Knight started Washington's five-run rally with a sacrifice fly to bring home AJ Guerrero. Then with the bases loaded, Braeden Terry hit a two-RBI single and was followed immediately by a second two-RBI single from Julian Sanders.
Β
Sanders added another RBI in the ninth, launching his first Husky homer. AJ Guerrero concluded the scoring with an RBI double.
Β
Gunnar Nichols closed the door on the Pilots, striking out three batters in the final two frames to secure the victory for the Dawgs. Jase Evangelista, Isaac Yeager, and Charlie Denomme also pitched in relief in the victory.
Β
Washington returns to action in its first home series of the season, taking on Gonzaga beginning with a 5:00 p.m. matchup on Friday, March 14.
