Huskies Shutout Maryland, Earn Second Big Ten Series Win

Β SEATTLE β The Washington pitchers were lights out on Sunday, propelling the Huskies to a 2-0 shutout win over Maryland. The win clinched the Dawgs first home Big Ten series and second conference series of the season.

Washington improves to 11-14 and 4-2 in Big Ten play while Maryland drops to 12-12 and 2-4 in the conference.

Sunday's contest resembled Saturday's, as neither team was able to generate much offense.

Justin Tims made his first weekend start for the Huskies and was dominant. He threw a career-high 5.2 innings along with a career-high tying five strikeouts.

The win was Tims' first career victory, and he now owns a 1-1 record. In his last four appearances, Tims has tossed 13.2 innings, allowing just eight hits, two runs, one earned run, three walks, and 15 strikeouts.

In the third inning, Blake Wilson recorded a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a Guerrero flyout to right field. Casen Taggart drove Wilson home with an RBI groundout to put the Huskies in front.

In the fifth, Jackson Hotchkiss reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Wilson. AJ Guerrero brought Hotchkiss home with an RBI groundout of his own to double the lead.

Josh Emanuels took over for Justin Tims partway through the sixth inning and pitched the remainder of the game. He finished with 3.1 IP, three hits allowed, and three strikeouts to earn his third save of the year.

With the victory and a 4-2 conference record, Washington moves into fourth place in the Big Ten standings.

The Huskies will head to Hillsboro, Ore. for a midweek matchup against Oregon State on Tuesday before returning to Big Ten play next weekend at Rutgers.
