EUGENE, Ore. – Seniors Jami Schlueter and Maggie Liebich each collected silver medals on the middle day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track Championships, and UW put several more qualifiers into Sunday's finals at Oregon's Hayward Field. Schlueter took second in the decathlon and Liebich, in just the second steeplechase of her career, dropped a 22-second PR to stand just one step down from the top of the podium.
Washington heads into Sunday's finale with 37 points on the men's side, in fourth-place, and in 10th-place on the women's side with 8 points but with many key events still to come. Sunday will be streamed on B1G+ for the first part of the day then televised live on Big Ten Network at 12:30 p.m.
Distances
Liebich was the last Husky in action tonight and nearly provided the shock of the day, as she was facing some veteran steeplers, three of whom ranked in the top-13 nationally coming in to tonight's championship. Liebich only ran her first steeple earlier this month at the OSU High Performance Meet, posting a time of 10:10 in her debut. That time ranked her just fifth in the conference coming in.
But Liebich showed all the confidence and poise to be a contender right from the gun. Almost immediately she and Michigan State's Katelyn Stewart-Barnett broke away from the field and they ran side by side, twenty meters ahead of the rest of the heat, for nearly the whole race. With two laps to go, Liebich moved into the lead and put a few strides on Stewart-Barnett. But on the final water pit, Liebich's relative inexperience in the event cropped up, as she stumbled and fell and the MSU runner retook the lead and had all the momentum to close the win. Liebich got up and still easily took second in 9:48.84. It was a 22-second PR, and the No. 5 time in school history, and will rank around 10th in the NCAA.
In the men's steeple, redshirt freshman Isaac Briggs got the first conference points of his Husky career, with a seventh-place finish in a time of 8:47.20, just off his PR. Fellow RS frosh Cruize Corvin ran 9:06.21 to place 23rd overall.
In the men's 800-meter prelims, freshman Martin Barco and senior Kyle Reinheimer each fought their way into the final through a difficult qualifying set-up with only the heat winners automatically advancing. Barco and Reinheimer got two of the four time qualifiers, as Barco ran an outdoor season-best 1:47.94, and Reinheimer crossed in 1:48.04.
Justin O'Toole, who has been out of action since the outdoor opener at Stanford, was 14th overall in 1:48.56.
In the women's 800-meters, Steph Driscoll turned in her best race as a Dawg, as she rolled to a huge season-best time of 2:04.11 to jump to No. 7 in school history. That was second in her heat and earned her a spot in Sunday's final. In the same heat, Claire Yerby ran 2:05.90, just one spot out of making the final as well.
Conference leader and indoor 800m champ Chloe Foerster did not race in the prelims today, for precautionary reasons.
Jumps
Prestin Artis, the 2024 Pac-12 Champ, scored for the Dawgs once again in the long jump, but he was unable to get a mark to rank amongst his best today. In round two, he went 24-6 1/4, which moved him up to third at the time, but after round three it was down to seventh. Artis had a couple close fouls and in round six he went 24-4 1/4 to remain in seventh overall. He added two points to the team score.
Tim Luebbert had a best jump of 23-8 to finish 15th overall, and Roman Hutchinson got banged up on his first attempt, which went 22-1 1/2, and he did not take any more jumps.
In the men's high jump, Leland Lieberg cleared the opening bar of 6-7 but did not make the next height of 6-9, finishing tied for 17th.
Sofia Cosculluela, competing simultaneously in the long jump and the hurdles, had a best long jump of 19-8, placing 10th overall to just miss the final by one spot. Ava Washburn was unable to find the board and fouled three attempts in the long jump.
Sprints
Cosculluela had one long jump on the board when she had to move over to the straightaway to run the 100-meter hurdles prelims. She posted a time of 13.66 seconds, and that would wind up ninth overall to grab the final spot for Sunday's final. The Spanish heptathlon champion chose to focus on those two open events rather than the multis this week, as she is already securely in the field for NCAA Outdoors in the heptathlon.
Senior Danielle Hunter was 23rd overall in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 12.00 seconds.
Throws
Junior Kaia Tupu-South threw 158-9 in the discus to place ninth in the first flight and she did not advance on to the final.
Multis
Jami Schlueter started day two of the decathlon in third but moved up to second by winning the first event of the day, the 110m hurdles, in 14.47 seconds. He stayed in second after the discus, where he was fourth overall at 128-7. In the pole vault, Schlueter had a best of 14-5 1/4 to remain in second as the gap between the top-three men was just 22 points.
In event nine, the javelin, it became more of a race for second for Schlueter, as Rafael Raap took command with a big javelin throw. Schlueter threw 151-7 and headed to the final run still in second but 191 points out of the lead. He battled to a 1,500-meters time of 4:44.63 to hang on to that silver medal position by just 14 points.
Schlueter posted a two-day total of 7,418 points for runner-up at his second-straight outdoor meet, after finishing second at the final Pac-12 Championships a year ago. He also took silver in the heptathlon at Big Ten Indoors this year. At four outdoor conference meets, Schlueter finished third, fourth, and second twice to earn 27 team points in the decathlon.
