SEATTLE -- A trip through the Midwest takes the 21st-ranked Huskies into two difficult road environments where 6th-ranked Wisconsin and 20th-ranked Minnesota await. Washington (14-3, 5-3 Big Ten) is on its way to Madison, Wisc. to take on the Badgers on Friday night at 6 p.m. Pacific time. From there it's over to Minneapolis to play the Gophers on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 11:00 a.m. Pacific. Both matches this weekend will be televised live on Big Ten Network.
The Huskies are 1-2 against top-25 teams this season, beating then-No. 10 Purdue but falling to Penn State and Indiana, both ranked 18th at the time. One or two wins this week would go a long way in making the Dawgs serious contenders to host NCAA tournament matches, albeit with more than a month left in the season. Last weekend, the NCAA committee gave a midseason snapshot of the tourney seeding, with the Huskies seeded 15th nationally, but that was followed by the loss to Indiana and the Dawgs fell to No. 16 in the RPI this week after being No. 10 one week earlier.
Washington has split its past six conference matches, and a few trends have made the difference between the three wins and three losses. Serving and passing has started things off. In the three wins, UW has 23 aces compared to 14 for its opponents. In the losses, the Dawgs have given up 18 aces and only served 12. That has led to the Huskies hitting under .200 in the three losses. Washington is 14-0 this year when hitting above .200. Indiana last Sunday was the first team all year to hit above .300 against UW, at .303. In their past three wins, UW held Rutgers to .199, Ohio State to .019, and Purdue to .164.
UW has also shaken up its lineup more in the past two weeks. First-year Sammy Destler had a breakout match in the win over Rutgers with 15 kills, then against Indiana, despite the loss, transfer Addie Kanouff led the offense for the first time with 9 kills hitting .529. First-year middle Hayden Conner has seen more regular action and second-year Ava Jo Berry made her season debut on Sunday after returning to full health.
The Badgers are tied for second in the Big Ten with a 7-1 mark, their only loss to No. 1 Nebraska. In conference play, Wisconsin is second with a .306 attack percentage and is holding opponents to a mark of .207. Setter Charlie Fuerbringer is second in conference play with 11.10 assists per set, and Jaela Auguste ranks fifth in attack percentage with a .405 mark. First-year Decelise Champion is hitting .292 with 3.41 kills per set and fellow first-year Audrey Flanagan is posting 3.35 kills per set and hitting .332 in conference matches. Lynney Tarnow leads the blocking with 1.24 per set.
Minnesota is tied with the Huskies in fifth in the conference with a 5-3 mark, and has won four in a row before it plays Purdue on Friday. The Gophers losses in conference came to Wisconsin, Illinois, and Oregon. Minnesota ranks third in conference play in both attack percentage and opponent attack percentage, hitting .266 and holding opponents to .185. They are leading the conference with 1.93 aces per set, and are second in digs with 15.10, and third in blocks with 2.67 per set. Mckenna Wucherer leads the squad with 3.52 kills per set in conference play to rank 10th in the league. McKenna Garr leads the league in aces with 0.59 per set, with 17 in 29 sets. Libero Zeynep Palabiyik also leads the league with 4.03 digs per set.
