MINNEAPOLIS – The 21st-ranked Huskies couldn't maintain their momentum from Friday's big upset, and lost in straight sets today to 20th-ranked Minnesota at Maturi Pavilion. Washington fourth-year middle blocker Katy Wessels passed the 400 career blocks mark and tied her career-high with nine kills as the lone bright spot.
UW had its poorest offensive efficiency of the season today, hitting .106 with 34 kills and 21 errors, while Minnesota had the second-best offensive showing against the UW defense, hitting .297.
Final scores were 25-17, 25-17, 25-20. Washington dropped to 15-4 and 6-4 in conference play, while Minnesota improved to 12-6 and 6-4 in conference. All four Husky losses this year have come in straight sets. If they have won one set, they have won the match.
Wessels had nine kills on 16 swings to hit .438 and had four blocks, the first one giving her No. 400, the 11th Husky ever to reach that career milestone.
Second-year Simona Mateska was coming off her elite 31 kill effort to lead the upset of No. 6 Wisconsin, but today she was held to nine kills with six errors. Maija Howse had six kills and four blocks. Andrea Fabikovicova had 28 assists and four digs, and Kaitlyn Nguyen had 16 digs.
Up Next: Washington starts a four-match homestand next weekend with Iowa on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., followed by Maryland at Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 12 noon.
