
Brandenburg Fans 11 As Washington Takes Opener Over Valpo

SEATTLE – Tommy Brandenburg diced up Valparaiso on Thursday to secure the 6-3 series-opening win over Valparaiso.
Washington improves to 14-15 on the season with the victory.
Brandenburg improved to 2-0 with the win after throwing 6.0 innings while allowing just three hits and one run against 11 strikeouts. It was a career day all around for the right-hander as he more than doubled his previous strikeout record (5, at Pepperdine).
Jackson Hotchkiss led the way offensively as the sophomore batted 2-4 at the plate. In the third inning, Hotchkiss tagged his ninth home run of the season, sending the ball 408 feet to deep right center.
Washington's right fielder continues his absurd hot streak to start his season. He's averaging one home run ever two games with nine bombs in 18 starts.
Hotchkiss led the Huskies in runs scored (2), hits (2), and RBIs (2) on the day. Daniel Porras also chipped in two hits, a run, and one RBI.
Jack Wade, Jaxson Gore, and Bryce Johnson pitched in relief in the game to secure the win. Wade took over for Brandenburg and threw 1.2 innings with no hits allowed, four walks, and four strikeouts.
Gore closed out the eighth, getting the final out before turning it over to Johnson for the ninth. Johnson allowed one hit and one run in the final frame but closed out the contest to get the win.
In total, the Husky pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts on the day, a season-high mark.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday night in game two of the series, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
