FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Washington's NCAA Outdoor Championships squad is solidified on the men's side, as day three of NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville saw four more Huskies punch their tickets to Eugene. Alex Rhodes, Reuben Reina, Martin Barco, and Isaac Briggs all moved through the quarterfinal rounds on the track today, to give the UW men a total of seven qualifiers.
One day of action remains on Saturday for the women. Washington has seven qualifiers on the women's side already with multiple opportunities to add even more on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. Pacific.
Today, Reina and Barco continued UW's tradition of superb 1,500-meter racing as they took two of the twelve spots to nationals in that event. Briggs then clocked a big PR in the steeplechase, the second-fastest in school history, to book his first nationals ticket. And Rhodes became the first UW man to make NCAAs in the 400-meters since 2011.
UW's seven men's qualifiers is up from three a year ago. All seven will be repping UW at NCAA Outdoors for the first time, though James Rhoads and Reuben Reina each competed at the meet previously for Penn and Arkansas, respectively.
Eugene-Bound
The first big race of the day for the Dawgs was the 1,500-meter quarterfinals. Luck of the draw had all three Dawgs that advanced out of round one placed in the same quarterfinal heat. Reina, Barco, and Tyler Bilyard were all racing in heat two, which had a little advantage knowing heat one had gone relatively slow, which opened up the two time qualifier slots for heat two if the race kept a good pace.
Reina and Barco both helped keep things moving along, and both were closing fast and out of traffic on the final lap to secure qualifying spots. Barco came across in third-place in 3:37.94 to auto-advance. Reina was just a step back in sixth in 3:38.14, easily taking one of the time qualifiers. Barco's time was also a new lifetime-best that put him up at No. 7 in UW history. Bilyard was unable to find the gear he needed on the last lap and he finished 11th in 3:42.91.
Next came the steeplechase quarterfinals, with Big Ten bronze medalist Isaac Briggs gunning for his first NCAA appearance. Briggs ran in fifth-place for much of the 3k, with the top-three auto-advancing plus three more time spots spread over the three heats. Briggs powered past one more runner in the final stretch to take fourth in a major PR of 8:31.75.
That time for Briggs was a seven-second personal-best, and less than a second off the School Record set by Ed Trippas in 2023 at 8:31.36. Prior to Trippas, the record was held by Dan Bell for 36 years with a time of 8:32.27, so Briggs dipped under that mark as well. His time would be the top time qualifier, and the sixth-fastest overall today.
The final qualifier for the men was Rhodes, the former NCAA D-III Champion who now will head to his first D-I championship. Rhodes, once again battling back from an injury just two weeks ago in the Big Ten final, went out conservatively as he did in round one, but made up ground in the second half and pulled into a close fourth-place at the finish in 45.43 seconds. That would be the top time qualifier and makes Rhodes the first Husky in the men's 400m semis since Maurice McNeal in 2011.
That's A Wrap
Three more Huskies had top-25 finishes today but couldn't quite crack the top-12 and had their excellent seasons come to a close. Leland Lieberg had a strong 19th-place effort in the high jump, clearing 6-11 1/2, but he went out jumping at a would-be PR of 7-1 1/2.
Jonathan Frazier capped his junior year with an 18th-place finish in the 400m hurdle quarterfinals. He ran a season's-best 50.57 out of a tough inside lane draw.
In the triple jump, Roman Hutchinson had a 24th-place finish with a best today of 50-6 3/4, just a couple inches off his PR. Junior Trevontay Smith was just two spots back in 26th overall with a leap of 50-3 1/4.
