FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three more Huskies joined the travel squad to nationals on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminaries, hosted by Arkansas at John McDonnell Field. With Chloe Foerster and Julia David-Smith securing spots, and Chloe Thomas adding a 5k bid to go with her 10k qualifier, Washington will head to NCAA Outdoors with 17 entries, its second-highest bid total under the current qualifying format which began in 2010.
The three Husky senior women all made sure they'll conclude their collegiate careers on the biggest stage. Foerster punched her ticket in the 1,500-meters for the third year in a row, while David-Smith earned a second-straight trip to the NCAA final in the 5,000-meters. Thomas doubled back from a grueling 10,000-meter qualifier on Thursday and showed her toughness once again by also making the cut in the 5,000-meters along with David-Smith.
Washington's 17 entries are its second-most behind only the 20 entries from the 2023 season. UW had 16 entries in 2022 and 2016. The NCAA Championships will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene from June 10-13.
Three Tickets To Go
Foerster has been a model of consistency starting in her sophomore season, making both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2024 and 2025 in the mile and 1,500-meters, and making the Indoor Championships earlier this season as well. She was looking for a final nationals ticket to extend her All-American Husky career.
In the 1,500-meter quarterfinal today, Foerster took the lead with two laps to go and pushed the pace. She got a bit stuck on the rail after runners moved around her on the bell lap, and she came across in seventh-place overall in 4:11.68. It was close, but just enough to nab the final time qualifier, and send Foerster to a third-straight NCAA Outdoor semifinal.
The final individual event of the week was the women's 5k. Two heats of 24 runners lined up, with auto spots only for the top-five in each heat, plus two more time qualifiers. In heat one, David-Smith crossed the line in 15:39.39, in sixth-place, just half a second out of fifth, and one second away from third, which left her having to sweat out heat two to see if her time would be faster than seventh-place from that race.
Heat two featured Thomas. Doubling back from the 10k, Thomas did not go aggressively with the leaders from the start, but late in the race she was still in the mix and working her way up higher and higher. She was trying to chase down an auto spot, but like David-Smith, she finished in sixth overall, but quickly knew that her time of 15:31.18 was fast enough to advance on time.
The drama then was how fast the next runner would finish behind Thomas. Mercy Kibet crossed in seventh, but in a time of 15:42.14, slower than David-Smith's mark, sending both sixth-place Dawgs on to Eugene.
Thomas will be the first Husky to race the 10k/5k double at NCAAs since Haley Herberg in 2021.
More Action On The Track
The first Husky on the track today was Mia Cochran in the first heat of the 1,500-meters. Cochran ran smart and aggressively but just ran out of gas a bit in the final 200-meters and finished seventh overall in 4:12.07. She wound up 14th overall, just two spots shy of advancing and less than half a second.
Cochran had another chance in the 5k, but it was a very tough turnaround rarely accomplished. She gave it her best effort, placing 18th in the first 5k heat in 16:34.09.
All week the Huskies seemed to straddle the 12/13-place cut line in several events, coming out on the right side several times, including Foerster and David-Smith today, and in both pole vault jump-offs on Thursday. But UW also had several agonizing near misses in 13th-place, and the one for today came in the 800-meters, where freshman Chloe Symon ran a career-best time but missed NCAAs by just one spot.
Symon lowered her own Canadian U20 National Record that she set just two weeks ago, running 2:02.38 to finish fourth in her quarterfinal heat. But that wound up as the 13th-fastest time, just 0.17 seconds from 12th. Jenica Swartz raced in the same heat as Symon, and placed sixth in 2:04.51, which was ultimately 17th overall.
Already qualified in the heptathlon, Sofia Cosculluela showed her skills in just one of those seven events today, running the 100m hurdles quarterfinals. Cosculluela ran a very fast time of 13.17 seconds, which would have been No. 2 in school history were it not slightly wind-aided at +2.7. At the Big Ten meet, Cosculluela ran a 13.16, but that was with an even bigger tailwind measured at +4.9, so today was easily her fastest hurdles time with wind below a +4.0.
Junior Josephine Welin made her West Prelims debut in the steeplechase today. Welin was seventh in her heat in 10:38.36. That ranked her 27th overall, improving on her No. 32 seeding entering the meet.
