EUGENE, Ore. – UW will be represented in yet another men's 1,500-meter NCAA final on Friday, as Reuben Reina advanced through the semis at Hayward Field on the first day of the four-day NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Husky men had four more top-20 finishes today.
Thursday the meet will shift to the women's competition, with seven UW women scheduled to compete, starting with Chloe Foerster in the 1,500-meter semifinals at 5:21 p.m. and followed soon with the women's pole vault at 5:35 p.m. featuring four Huskies: Hana Moll, Amanda Moll, Sara Borton, and Veronica Vacca.
With Reina advancing, Head Coach Andy Powell has now had a men's 1,500-meter NCAA finalist in 17 of the past 18 years, with eight NCAA Champions in that stretch.
Reina ran a career-best time to advance, and moved up to No. 3 in UW history with a time of 3:36.31. That was sixth in his 12-man semifinal heat, giving him one of the two time qualifiers.
In the other 1,500m semi, Martin Barco crossed in seventh as part of a big pack, but his time of 3:40.29 would not hold up to advance. Barco picks up All-America honorable mention for his first individual NCAA trip.
Another NCAA debut came from Isaac Briggs in the steeplechase. Briggs took eighth in his semifinal heat and wound up 17th overall in a time of 8:34.56, the second-fastest time in his career just behind the PR he set two weeks ago at Prelims. It's honorable mention All-America for Briggs.
The men's pole vault final featured school record-holder James Rhoads, who took third at the NCAA Indoor meet. Rhoads cracked the top-10 again today but couldn't quite climb the podium. He finished ninth overall with a clearance of 18-4 1/2. Only four men went higher, but Rhoads cleared 18-4 1/2 on a third attempt and had another third-attempt make at his first bar of the day to get the short end of the tiebreaks.
Evan Jenkins wrapped up the day for U-Dub in the 10k final. Jenkins covered the 25 laps in 28-minutes, 30.16-seconds which was good for 14th-place in the 24 man field. That's the highest a Husky has finished in the men's 10k final since 2001, good for Second Team All-America honors.
A couple Huskies had some rough luck with injuries and were forced to drop out of their respective competitions. Alex Rhodes, the fastest Husky quarter-miler in 18 years, appeared to aggravate the same issue that caused him to pull up in the Big Ten Outdoor 400-meter final. He pulled up today on the backstretch of his semifinal and did not finish.
In the decathlon, redshirt freshman Tomeko Cates was solid through the first three events, running the seventh-fastest 100-meters (10.84) and posting the fourth-best long jump (24-1 1/2). But after a tough high jump that was below his usual standards, Cates did not line up for the 400-meters to end day one. He is not expected to continue on day two due to an injury.
