SEATTLE - Sophomore Benjamin Somoza's first collegiate goal came at an opportune time as a penalty kick in the 112th minute against Fresno State to give Washington the 2-1 victory in the final game of the NIKE Husky Classic. UW, now 4-3-2 on the season, finished second in the tournament with a 1-1 mark behind Portland, which was 2-0 after a 1-0 overtime win over San Jose State.
The Huskies' first goal came at 31:53, when senior Wes Hart netted a deflection after the Fresno State keeper made a save on freshman Dayo Oyetuga's shot. But the Bulldogs answered just six minutes later at 37:46, when Noah Delgado's shot off a Hugo Alcarez assist snuck past UW keeper Chad Olsen.
The teams then played 73:14 of scoreless soccer before Somoza's penalty kick, which came after Fresno State's Miro Bilaver hand-balled a shot by sophomore Jake Sagare away from the net.
UW outshot Fresno State 25-13 and had a 6-4 corner-kick advantage. Olsen made five saves on the day, while FSU's Jeremy Proud made seven.
"Obviously we were very emotional about scoring the winning goal," head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "This game has been a reflection of our season--defending very well but getting punished by every time we'er a half-step off. Statistically we are outshooting our opponents, but we're not finding the back of the net."
In the first game, Portland outlasted San Jose State in overtime. UP's Cristian Sleeter, who entered the game for the first time after regulation, found the back of the net at 97:42 off an assist by Garrett Marcum.
Portland's Conor Casey was named the tournament's most valuable offensive player, while Ryan Suarez of San Jose State earned the defensive honor. Also on the all-tournament team were Kelly Gray of Portland, Wes Hart of Washington, Adam Mauer of Fresno State, Morgan McCoy of Washington, Gabe Porvenza of Fresno State, Bryan Roney of Fresno State, Billy Sleeth of Washington, Curtis Spiteri of Portland, and Brian Winters of Portland.
