SEATTLE - The Gonzaga baseball team beat Washington 10-5 Sunday to earn a split in the four-game weekend series at Husky Ballpark.
Designated hitter Barry Matthews homered twice to lead the Bulldogs (5-3). Washington fell to 3-6 on the season.
Trailing 5-4, Gonzaga took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Jared Hertz doubled home two runs. Matthew's second homer, a three-run shot in the sixth, padded the lead.
GU reliever Sean Lichter (1-0) pitched the final six and two-thirds innings for the victory. He allowed only three hits and fanned eight. UW freshman reliever Tyler Shepple (0-1) was pinned with the loss. Another Husky freshman, Brian Barton, worked the last three innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and five Ks.
UW senior Ed Erickson belted a two-run homer, his first of the year, in the third inning. Freshman DH Jay Garthwaite added a single, a double and a stolen base for the UW.
The Huskies continue the homestand next weekend when they play host to Oregon State for a two-game non-conference series Saturday and Sunday.
