LOS ANGELES - UCLA junior Rob Henkel fanned 18 batters and catcher Forrest Johnson homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth to lead the Bruins to a 2-1 win over Washington Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Huskies fell to 7-12 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Bruins improved to 15-10 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10.
Henkel (4-1), who had fanned 16 in each of his last two outings, struck out the side five times and retired the first nine UW hitters in the game. The old record of 17 Ks had been held Jon Brandt. Henkel allowed only four hits and didn't walk a batter. UW starter Matt Massingale (2-2) went the distance in the loss, allowing the two Bruin runs on seven hits while striking out seven.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Johnson, the Bruin catcher who would eventually win the game, doubled down the third base line to score Chase Utley. Washington came back to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth. Freshman DH Jay Garthwaite tripled off the center field wall and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Justin Drake.
The Huskies and Bruins continue the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on radio on KKOL AM-1300 in Seattle.
