PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland scored two runs in the ninth and another in the 10th to hand the Washington baseball team its fourth straight loss, 7-6, Tuesday at Pilot Stadium.
The UW fell to 3-9 with the loss while the Pilots improved to 8-3.
Steve Jackson's two run-single in the ninth tied the score at 6-6. In the 10th, the Pilots had runners at first and second with one out when third baseman Brock Griffin reached on a bad-hop single over the Husky third baseman to score Cory Lunde with the winning run.
Portland opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning. Nate Hare led off with a single and advanced to third on a double from Gavin Hare. One run came across on a Scott Allen groundout and the second scored on a sacrifice fly from Steve Jackson.
Washington tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth. Ed Erickson singled with one out before freshman DH Jay Garthwaite belted his first career home run over the left field fence. In the fifth, freshman catcher Jefferson Thiel led off with a single and freshman center fielder Justin Drake knocked his first career homer, also to left field, to give the UW a 4-2 lead.
After Portland used three UW errors to tie the game at 4-4 in the sixth, Washington posted two runs in the eighth to pull back in front. Michael Done's single scored pinch runner Matt Hollod to make it 5-4. Freshman pinch hitter Tyler Davidson eventually singled to drive in Done with the Huskies' sixth run.
UW junior starter Matt Massingale worked seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while fanning six. UP reliever Kyle Bebout (1-0) got the win while Taylor Grant (1-2) took the loss.
The Huskies have the next 10 days off for finals before taking on Dayton in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark beginning March 17.
