SEATTLE - Junior Jeff Carlsen struck out a career-high 10 batters to lead the Washington baseball team to an 8-5 win over California Saturday at Husky Ballpark in the second game of a three- game Pac-10 Conference series.
The win improved the Husky record to 10-14 and 2-3 in the Pac-10 while Cal fell to 14-17 overall and 5-6 in the league. The weekend series is tied at one win apiece.
Carlsen (4-1), a 6-foot-7 righthander from Poulsbo, worked seven and one-third innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk. All four of the runs he allowed came in the third inning as the Bears took a 4-1 lead. Mike Tonis doubled home the first run before Xavier Nady added an RBI single. Clint Hoover's two-run triple capped the scoring.
Washington would tie the game in the fourth, when junior Marc Rittenhouse belted a three- run homer to make it 4-4. It was Rittenhouse's team-leading sixth home run of the season.
In the sixth, freshman shortstop Tila Reynolds gave the Huskies a 6-4 lead when he singled home a pair of runs. In the eighth, Reynolds belted his first career home run, a two-run shot to right field to make it 8-4. Freshman Jay Garthwaite also added a solo home run, his second of the season, for Washington.
Cal's Jason Williams hit a solo homer in the ninth off of reliever Taylor Grant, who held on to earn his third save of the year. Bears starter Brad Steele (3-5) gave up six runs on nine hits over five and one-third innings for the loss.
Reynolds finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI while Rittenhouse went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
The Bears and Huskies close out the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKOL AM-1300.
