WICHITA - With two outs and no one on base in the ninth inning, the Washington baseball team posted seven runs to stun No. 23 Wichita State, 15-10, in front of 4,360 awe-struck fans at Eck Stadium, a season-high attendance for the month-old, rebuilt facility.
The Huskies (17-20), who led early and had to come back with three runs in the seventh to grab an 8-7 lead, lost that lead in the eighth when the Shockers scored three runs. But in the ninth, the Huskies were behind 10-8 and down to their final strike before collecting seven straight hits off of closer Greg Bauer, and, eventually, Mike Dennison.
After singles by Ed Erickson and Todd Linden, Jay Garthwaite picked up his fifth RBI of the day with a single to make it 10-9. Michael Done singled to tie it at 10-10 before Dennison came on. Freshman Tyler Davidson singled to right to post the go-ahead run before Jefferson Thiel added insurance with a two-run double and Matt Hollod hit a two- run homer for the final tallies. The win broke the Shockers' eight-game winning streak. Wichita State (27-11) had also won nine in a row against Washington, dating back to 1994.
Washington jumped on Wichita State starter Adam Peterson in the first inning, scoring three runs to break the Shockers' string of 23 straight scoreless innings. With two outs, Linden doubled down the left field line to send hom Tila Reynolds, who had singled and stolen second. Garthwaite followed Linden's double with his fifth home run of the season to make it 3-0.
The Huskies posted two more runs in the third when Peterson gave up a walk and a single to begin the inning before Garthwaite drove home a run with a single. Shocker reliever Tymber Lee came on for Peterson and gave up a sacrifice fly to Tyler Davidson to make it 5-0.
But Lee would go on to face the minimum number of UW hitters over the next four innings while the Shockers rallied to take a lead. After scoring two runs in the third inning, WSU scored four in the fifth to pull in front, 6-5. With two out and one run already in, UW starter Jeff Carlsen gave up an RBI double to Pat Magness, a run-scoring single to Brad Wright and a double to Brian Burgamy that send home the go-ahead run. Another Shocker run in the sixth made it 7-5.
The Huskies took the lead back in the seventh, scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit. After Lee walked the first two batters to begin the inning, he threw wide to first attempting to field a sacrifice bunt. Ed Erickson sent a ground ball to short that looked like a double play ball, but shortstop Tanner Welch made an error and a run scored. A Linden groundout and a sacrifce fly from Garthwaite off of closer Greg Bauer gave the Dawgs an 8-7 lead.
