WICHITA - Junior Marc Rittenhouse went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three runs batted in and Matt Massingale threw a complete game to lead the Washington baseball team to a second straight victory over 23rd-ranked Wichita State, 11-4, in front of 4,912 fans at Eck Stadium.
Washington (18-20) has now won four in a row overall and eight straight in non- conference play. Wichita State (27-12) had won seven straight and 16 of 18 prior to losing to the Huskies, 15-10, Friday night.
Rittenhouse led off the game with a home run to center fielder. The 5-foot-10 center fielder, who had five home runs over the last two seasons, now leads the team with 11. After a leadoff walk in the third to catcher Tim Rice, Rittenhouse doubled to put runners at second and third. A bunt from Tila Reynolds plated one run and an Ed Erickson single drove in Rittenhouse to make it 3-0.
In the fourth, Tyler Davidson singled, stole second and scored on a single by Tim Rice to give UW a 4-0 edge. In the following inning, the Dawgs made it 5-0 when Michael Done was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a single from Todd Linden.
Wichita State got back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Hawkins tripled home a pair of runs before scoring on a triple from Koyie Hill. Hill scored on a Pat Magness groundout to leave the Huskies with a 5-4 lead.
But the Huskies responded quickly by scoring six runs in the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 11-4. With one run in on an RBI triple by Brent Robertson, Rittenhouse belted his second homer of the day. Then, after two more singles and a pitching change, DH Jay Garthwaite hit a three-run homer, his second of the series, and Washington led 11-4.
Davidson and Erickson each knocked three hits for the Huskies, who tied a season-high with 17 hits. The UW defense turned five double plays in the game to help Massingale (4- 5), who posted his third complete game of the season. His two previous complete games had been one-run Husky losses.
The Huskies and Shockers close out the three-game series Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Pacific time. The game will air live on radio in the Seattle area on KKOL AM-1300.
