TEMPE, Ariz. - Fourth-ranked Arizona State, the nation's top-scoring team, jumped on the Washington baseball team from the start and rolled to a 25-5 win over the Huskies Friday night in a Pac-10 game at Packard Stadium.
The night began on an odd note as 70s rock icon Alice Cooper, a Phoenix resident, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. From then on, everything went the Sun Devils' way. ASU scored five in the first, two in the second and seven in each of the third and fourth innings to pile up a 21-0 lead.
ASU improved to 38-12 overall and 13-6 in the Pac-10 while Washington fell to 25-24 overall and 7-12 in the conference.
Devils second baseman Brooks Conrad led the attack, going 5-for-5 with three doubles and six runs batted in. Catcher Casey Myers hit the only ASU home run of the game and finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.
UW starter Matt Massingale (6-6), who had thrown complete game victories in his last three starts, lasted only two and two-thirds innings, allowing 13 runs on 12 hits. ASU starter Jon Switzer improved to 10-1, allowing only one hit and no runs in four innings of work.
Down 21-0, the Huskies finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Tyler Davidson doubled for the second time in the game to plate Ed Erickson. In the seventh, the Huskies added three more on an RBI triple by Tila Reynolds, an run-scoring single from Erickson and an error. Jay Garthwaite hit a solo home run, his 11th of his freshman season, in the eighth.
The Huskies and Sun Devils play game two of the series Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and close it out Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Both games will air live in the Seattle area on KKOL AM-1300.
