Sun Devils Hand Huskies 17-5 Loss

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 4 Arizona State, the nation's top-scoring baseball team, posted runs in each of the first seven innings to roll over Washington 17-5 Saturday night in a Pac-10 game at Packard Stadium.
Washington dropped to 25-25 on the season and 7-13 in the conference with the loss while ASU improved its record to 39-12 overall and 14-6 in the Pac-10. Friday night, the Sun Devils routed the Huskies 25-5. With the win, ASU head coach Pat Murphy earned his 600th career victory.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Todd Linden doubled home Ed Erickson, but the Devils scored one in the bottom of the first to tie it and four in the second to take a lead they'd never lose.
ASU left fielder Mel Stocker went 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and three runs batted in to pace his team. Mitch Jones, the nation's home run leader with 25, didn't hit one out of the park, but had two doubles and a triple in six at bats. Dennis Wyrick and Jeff Phelps eached added three hits.
Washington got two hits apiece from Linden and Michael Done, who also stole two bases.
Husky starter Jeff Carlsen suffered the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season. Carlsen, who became the UW's all-time leader with his 42nd career start, allowed six earned runs and nine hits over three innings. ASU reliever Franco Pezely improved to 7-2 with the victory, fanning 10 over five innings.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live in the Seattle area on KKOL AM-1300.
