TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite keeping the score closer than in the previous two games through much of Sunday's contest, the Washington baseball team was beaten by Arizona State, 13-2, as the No. 4 Sun Devils pulled away in the late-going to finish a Pac-10 Conference series sweep.
Washington (25-26 overall, 7-14 Pac-10) trailed by only one run at 3-2 before the Sun Devils broke through with five runs in the sixth. In that frame, ASU took advantage of two walks and two Husky errors and second baseman Brooks Conrad belted a long home run over the center field wall to account for the last three of the runs. ASU (40-12, 15-6) posted three more in the seventh and two in the eighth to pad its lead.
After ASU had scored three runs in the first, Husky starter Taylor Grant (2-5) settled down, holding the Devils scoreless until the sixth. In the meantime, the Huskies scored a pair of runs. In the fourth, back to back doubles from Todd Linden and Tyler Davidson accounted for one and, in the sixth, Linden singled, stole second and scored on a Jay Garthwaite single.
Sun Devils starter Jered Liebeck (2-1) earned the victory, working five innings and allowing only one run on four hits and three strikeouts. Conrad finished his day 2-for-5 with a triple, a homer and five runs batted in. Mitch Jones, Casey Myers, Jeff Phelps and Jonah Martinadded two RBI apiece for ASU.
Both Linden and Davidson finished the game with a pair of hits. Davidson was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a stolen base. Linden scored both of the Husky runs and also stole one base.
The Huskies close out the season with five home games next week. Tuesday and Wednesday, the UW takes on Gonzaga in a pair of 6:30 p.m. games, which will both air on KKOL AM-1300. Next Friday through Sunday, USC makes its first trip to Seattle since 1971 in the final games of the year.
