SEATTLE - Michael Done homered and drove in five runs and Todd Linden and Ed Erickson each had three RBI as the Washington baseball team out-slugged Gonzaga, 16-9, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies evened their record at 26-26 with the victory while Gonzaga fell to 27-24. Husky reliever Tyler Shepple picked up the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season, working four innings and allowing only one run on four hits. GU starter Sean Lichter (2-4) gave up seven earned runs, leaving the game after facing four batters in the second.
After Brent Church hit a solo homer in the top of the first to give Gonzaga a 1-0 lead, Ed Erickson belted a three-run round-tripper, his 11th of the year, in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. The Zags came back with three in the top of the first to go ahead 4-3, but Washington exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second to move in front for good.
In that seven-run second, freshman catcher Jefferson Thiel led off with a home run and a three-run blast from Done completed the scoring. Done finished the day 4-for-5. Freshman shortstop Tila Reynolds went 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
For Gonzaga, DH Barry Matthews extended his hitting streak to 25 games, with a single in five at bats. Adam Stokey went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and catcher Brian Munhall was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Tomorrow evening, the Huskies and Bulldogs complete the two-game series with another 6:30 p.m. game (the game IS 6:30, not 2:00 p.m., as some schedules say). The game will air on KKOL AM-1300.
