#15 UW Women's Soccer Team Suffers First Defeat

PORTLAND, Ore. - Midfielder Anne Makinen accounted for two goals and an assist Saturday as second-ranked Notre Dame dealt No. 15 Washington its first defeat, a 5-0 decision in the first round of the Portland Adidas Invitational at Merlo Field.
The Huskies' record fell to 6-1 after opening the season with six wins for the first time in the 10-year history of the program. Notre Dame, the 1995 NCAA champion and national runner-up last year, improved to 7-0 and will likely take over the No. 1 spot in the polls due to a loss by top-ranked North Carolina.
Irish forward Meotis Erikson, a product of Kamiakin (Wash.) High School, opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 26:10. She played a part in the fourth goal, hitting a shot off the crossbar that rebounded to Makinen who booted it in at 57:40.
A leading national player of the year candidate, Makinen scored Notre Dame's final goal on a penalty kick at 64:12.
Reserve Ali Lovelace scored the second and third Irish goals within a two-minute span. She converted a pass from Makinen at 29:11 and added an unassisted tally at 31:11.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) recorded seven saves for the Huskies who were out shot 16-7. Notre Dame's Elizabeth Wagner made two saves en route to the shutout.
The Huskies play San Diego State on Sunday in the second day of the Portland tournament.
