PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Caroline Putz distributed three assists for the 15th-ranked Washington women's soccer team that scored three unanswered second-half goals Sunday en route to a 5-2 victory over San Diego State in the final day of the Portland Adidas Invitational at Merlo Field.
The Huskies (7-1) responded to their first setback of the season, a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday, to reach the seven-win plateau faster than any time in their 10-year history. The previous best start was in 1994 when UW hit the seven-win mark in its 10th game.
Washington broke a 2-2 tie, taking the lead for good nine minutes into the second half. Putz picked up her third assist, feeding a pass to freshman Blair Ruport for a goal at 54:08.
A pair of unassisted tallies, by senior Tami Bennett (Seattle Christian HS) at 72:06 and senior Theresa Wagner (Lakeside HS) at 83:58, secured the win. It was the 25th career goal for Bennett, drawing her within two of Tara Bilanski's (1992-95) school scoring record of 27.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) registered one save for the Huskies. Linnea Quinones had five saves for San Diego State which was outshot 17-8.
Husky sophomore Megan McKinstry opened the scoring in the second minute. She converted a corner kick from Putz at 1:14 on a play in which Melissa Bennett (Seattle Christian HS) was also credited with an assist.
Washington scored on another Putz corner kick within one minute after Fay DeLeon tied the game for San Diego State (2-6) at 20:00. Sophomore defender Vanessa Pierce (Woodinville HS) scored on a header at 20:47 to put UW ahead 2-1. The Aztecs tied the game 2-2 on Niki Torruella's goal at 25:33, the final score of the first half.
The Huskies return to Oregon next weekend, closing out a seven-game road trip on Saturday against Portland.
