STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford ace Jeremy Guthrie improved his won-lost record to 6-0 as the top-ranked Cardinal handed Washington a 9-3 loss Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
Guthrie, who entered the game with a 0.94 earned run average, actually saw that mark go up despite a strong outing. The sophomore, who spent the last two years on a Mormon mission, pitched eight innings, allowing three runs, two earnd on seven hits while striking out nine.
The Cardinal broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in fourth inning and Guthrie took over from there. In the fourth, Stanford took advantage of a hit batter, a walk and error and a wild pitch to score their runs. The biggest hit of the inning was a two-run double from Jason VanMeetren.
Husky starter Tyler Shepple (0-3) gave up six runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings for the loss as Washington saw its four-game winning streak snapped. The Huskies fell to 13-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal, playing their first conference game, improved to 19-5 and 1-0. Stanford has won 17 of its last 19 games.
Washington got to Guthrie for a run in the first when Done walked, stole second and scord on single up the middle from Bryan Johnson. Guthrie had gone 18 and two-thirds innings without allowing a run prior to the Huskies scoring.
Stanford evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the second. Andy Topham tripled down the right-field line to lead off and scored on a groundout by Sam Fuld.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Michael Done singled and scored when Tyler Davidson's double was misplayed, allowing Done to score from first and Davidson to move to third. Davidson scored when Johnson grounded out to third.
The Huskies and Cardinal continue the three-game series Saturday and Sunday with 1:00 p.m. games. Both will air live in the Seattle area on KSRB AM-1150.
