SEATTLE - BYU pitcher Jesse Craig went the distance and Cougars center fielder Adrian Molina went 4-for-4 as Brigham Young handed the Washington baseball team a 4-2 loss Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Craig (3-5) threw his first complete game of the season for the victory. He allowed two runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out six. BYU improved to 15-19 on the season while the UW dropped to 23-14.
Husky freshman Tyler Cheney (1-4) suffered the loss despite a solid outing. The lefty from Richland worked seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
BYU scored the game's first run in the third. Stetson Banks reached on a bunt single, stole second and eventually scored on an infield single from Seth Johnson. In the fourth, Cougars DH Kent Walton sent his second home run of the season over the wall in left- center to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Washington tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and none on, Danny Cox drew a walk. Ryan Anderson followed with a hit-and-run single through the right side to put runners at the corners. The Cougars then appeared to have Anderson picked off going to second, but the throw from pitcher Jesse Craig was errant, allowing Cox to score from third. Matt Stevens then singled up the middle to drive in Anderson with the tying run.
In the top of the seventh, BYU went back on top Molina belted a long solo home run to left, his third of the season, to give the Cougars a 3-2 edge. In the ninth, Molina delivered a two-out single to drive in Walton to make it a 4-2 lead.
Anderson led the Husky hitters with three singles, a run and a stolen base in four at bats. Hague added two hits for the Dawgs.
Saturday, the Huskies and Cougars wrap up the series with a 12 noon game. Live audio and stats from the game will be available at gohuskies.com.
