SEATTLE - Ty Afenir drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force in the winning run as the Washington baseball team beat Nevada, 4-3, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (5-15) and Wolf Pack (5-14) entered the ninth inning tied at 3-3. On Friday night, Nevada won, 2-1, with a run in the ninth.
Saturday, the Huskies loaded the bases on three walks, including one intentional free pass. After a strikeout for the second out, Afenir worked the count full and then took ball four, allowing pinch runner Brendan Gardner-Young to score from third.
UW starter Jeff Brigham went eight and one-third innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks. Freshman Tyler Kane (1-1) got the final two outs in the top of the ninth to pick up the victory.
Nevada reliever Mat Keplinger (0-1) took the loss, having walked the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth.
Joe Meggs led the Husky offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Jacob Lamb added two hits in four at bats.
Nevada notched the game's first run in the top of the first. After one out, two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for Joe Kohan, who bounced into a force play at second, but drove in the runner for third to give the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead.
Washington went in front in the second inning. With one out, Chase Anselment was hit by a pitch and Will Sparks bunted his way aboard. Catcher B.K. Santy followed with a single to center to tie the score and the Huskies went on top when Sparks came home on a balk.
Nevada answered in the third. After a single from Waylen Sing Chow and a double from Nick Melino, Stassi grounded to first base to score Sing Chow. A sacrifice fly from Kohan plated Melino, putting the Wolf Pack back in front, 3-2.
Washington finally got back to even in the eighth inning. Afenir led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice from Spencer Rogers. After taking third on a wild pitch, Afenir scored when Meggs singled through a drawn-in infield, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Huskies and Wolf Pack close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Fans can watch live video, for free, at gohuskies.com.
