SEATTLE - As has become common in recent weeks, the Washington baseball team found itself in a tight pitchers' duel Friday night at Husky Ballpark, but Cal starter Erik Johnson out-dueled the UW's Geoff Brown and the 16th-ranked Bears pulled away late for a 6-2 win in the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 series.
Johnson (5-1) went six and two-thirds for the Bears. He gave up one run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts for the win. Kyle Porter picked up the save, pitching the final two and one-third innings.
Brown (1-3), a senior from Mill Creek, also turned in a solid outing in the loss. In six and two-thirds, he gave up two runs on just four hits and no walks while striking out three.
Neither team was able to do much at the plate through the first four innings. In the fifth, the Golden Bears (21-9, 7-3 in the Pac-10) broke through when third baseman Mitch Delfino lifted a solo homer into the left-field bullpen, giving Cal a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies (10-21, 2-5 in the Pac-10) got two aboard thanks to a walk to Chase Anselment and a single from B.K. Santy. Ty Afenir then chopped a ball over the third baseman's head into left, scoring Anselment to tie the score at 1-1.
In the seventh, Cal got a leadoff single from Tony Renda and a two-out walk to Delfino to put two aboard for center fielder Darrel Matthews. Matthews came through with a double into the left-field corner, scoring both runners ahead of him to give the Bears back the lead at 3-1.
In the ninth, the Huskies got a run when Afenir singled and scored on a long, pinch-hit double from freshman Ryan Wiggins.
Cal pulled away with three runs in the eighth, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Renda, an error and an RBI double from Chadd Krist.
Jacob Lamb finished 3-for-5 while Afenir was 2-for-4 to lead the Husky offense.
The Huskies and Bears play again Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and then conclude the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio and fans can watch live video of both games, for free, at gohuskies.com.
