PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State won the second game of the three-game Apple Cup series Saturday, beating the Husky baseball team, 11-6, at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Washington (11-27 overall, 3-11 in the Pac-10) got three hits from left fielder Joe Meggs and two runs batted in from center fielder Brendan Gardner-Young. Right fielder Chase Anselment also homered for the Huskies.
Chad Arnold (1-3) picked up the win for the Cougars (19-19, 5-12 Pac-10). He gave up four runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings. WSU left fielder Patrick Claussen went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and five RBI to lead his team.
The Cougars grabbed the early lead in the first. Cody Bartlett singled to begin the inning and Claussen followed with a double down the left field line to drive him in. Derek Jones singled to right to put runners at the corners and Taylor Ard scored Claussen with a sacrifice fly to right. A double-play groundout ended the inning with WSU in front, 2-0.
In the third, WSU's Matt Agyropoulos doubled to drive in two more.
Washington closed the gap in the fourth. Anselment led off the inning with a homer, his third of the season. Later in the fourth, singles from Gardner-Young and Meggs each drove in a run, cutting the WSU lead to 4-3.
However, the Cougars stretched it out with three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Claussen's three-run triple in the fifth was the big hit.
Washington scored a fourth run in the sixth when Gardner-Young grounded into a force with the bases loaded. In the ninth, the Huskies loaded the bases on a single from Jacob Lamb, a double from Troy Scott and a walk to Anselment. Ryan Wiggins drew a walk to force in one run and Eric Peterson's sacrifice fly brought home another to account for the final totals.
The series wraps up Sunday with a 12 noon game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
