PALO ALTO, Calif. - The remarkable 2010-11 season for All-Americans Venise Chan and Denise Dy finally reached its finale today, as the pair were unable to upset the third-seeded doubles duo from USC in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships today. Dy and Chan both assured themselves of ITA All-America honors in both singles and doubles this season, a first for two Huskies in the same year.
Chan and Dy had knocked off teams ranked No. 17 and No. 5 over the past two days to move into the quarterfinals. But against the third-seeded Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez, the Huskies were unable to bounce back all the way from a slow start.
Christian and Sanchez won the first set quickly, 6-1. Chan and Dy looked to swing the momentum in set two, and took a 3-2 lead, but USC came back to win four of the final five games to get the 6-4 second set win and move on to the semifinals.
It was the final match of Chan's incredibly Husky career. She was a two-time All-Pac-10 First Team selection and two-time Second Team selection, and finished with the second-most singles wins in UW history with 101. Chan made the NCAA Singles Round of 16 each of the past two seasons, and ranked in the Top-25 for nearly all of the past two years, with a career-best No. 9 ranking. She was an ITA All-American in singles last year and will earn the honor again for singles as well as doubles this year.
Dy's brilliant season also comes to a close, but the junior will be one of the nation's top-ranked players again to start the fall of 2011. She was ranked fourth nationally heading into the NCAA tournament, and advanced to the second round. It remains to be seen where she will wind up in the final ITA singles rankings, but she could threaten Kristina Kraszewski's final No. 6 ranking as the highest year-end ranking in school history.
Only Dea Sumantri in 2004 had earned ITA All-America honors in both singles and doubles in the same season, with Chan and Dy now both achieving the feat. The ITA will make the All-America teams official next week.
