BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 25 Cal scored the game-winner in the 51st minute to knock off the visiting Huskies, 2-1, on Friday night at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.
Cal moved to 13-3 and 6-1 in the Pac-12 with the win while the Huskies dropped to 9-5-2, 2-4-1. Cal has a seven-game winning streak.
The first goal was netted by Betsy Hassett on an assist from Ariana Martinez in the 31st minute. Martinez crossed the ball to Hassett for the header just outside the six yard back to the back right of the net passed a diving Kari Davidson.
Just two minutes later, sophomore Jaclyn Softli (Sammamish, Wash.) tied the game with her third goal of the season. Junior Annie Sittauer crossed the ball to the right side of the box, the ball bounced off of Softli to Emily Kruger, the Cal keeper, who bobbled it and Softli put the ball into the right side of the net.
Hassett also scored the game-winner in the 51st minute and was assisted by Emi Lawson. The second Cal goal was off of a free kick on the right side of the field to the left corner on another header.
Possession was fairly even for most of the first half. In the second half, each team had its chances. With just over 21 minutes left, the Huskies took three straight corners, but were unable to convert.
Junior Hillary Zevenbergen almost equalized the game with 75 seconds left. She took a great turn around shot but it was stopped by Kruger.
Cal had eight total shots on goal while the Huskies had five. Davidson made six saves in goal and Kruger made four for the Golden Bears.
Up next for the Huskies is the defending national champion Stanford. The Cardinal are No. 2 in the country.
