Dawgs Play Three In Town, Two At Home Friday
August 30, 2016 | Volleyball
SEATTLE - After opening their season on the opposite coast, the fifth-ranked Husky volleyball team is back home in Seattle this week, but makes one last quick road stop before its home opener on Friday. Washington (2-0) goes south to Seattle U. (2-1) to take on the Redhawks in the first match in a refurbished Connolly Center this Thursday at 7 p.m. The Dawgs will then have a quick turnaround to open their home season with a double-header against Idaho and Villanova, with first serves at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
The matches on Friday will be UW's only home appearances prior to the Pac-12 opener against Washington State on Sept. 21. After this week, the Huskies head to Hawaii for three matches and then visit Los Angeles to take on Maryland and Oklahoma to round out nonconference play.
Washington opened its season with road victories at James Madison and American, two defending league champions, and in the case of American, a team with three NCAA tourney wins over the last three years. The Huskies were down two sets to one at American before coming back to win in five, behind career-bests from Courtney Schwan (21 kills), Tia Scambray (19 kills), Crissy Jones (17 kills, 19 digs), and Bailey Tanner (48 assists). Over the opening weekend, five players made their UW debuts, including Shayne McPherson, Cailin Onosko, Avie Niece, Kameron McLain, and Kara Bajema.
Seattle U. went 2-1 on its opening weekend, getting wins over Portland and Utah State before losing to Oregon State. Washington last played Seattle in 2014, getting a 3-0 win, and last played the visiting role back in 2009, also a 3-0 win. Idaho is off to a 3-0 start including a big victory at New Mexico in five sets. The Huskies have not faced the Vandals since a win back in 2003. Villanova is making its first ever trip out to Alaska Airlines Arena, and the Wildcats are coming off their best season in years, as they went 25-9 in 2015 and made the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1997. Villanova was picked fourth in the preseason Big East poll. They went 2-1 last week, defeating Florida Gulf Coast and Ohio but falling to 22nd-ranked Western Kentucky.
