No. 2 Huskies Down Oregon State 2-1 For Seventh-Straight Win
October 13, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- No. 2 Washington ran its win-streak to seven and closed out the first half of conference play with a perfect record thanks to an impressive 2-1 victory over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 11-1-0 on the season and to 5-0-0 in Pac-12 play with the victory, staying perfect at home with a 6-0-0 mark. The Beavers fall to 5-5-1 and to 2-2-1 in the conference.
Washington got goals from a pair of seniors as redshirt senior Ryan DeGroot and senior Jaret Townsend found the back of the net on the day. DeGroot netted his first goal of the season in his first start of the season while Townsend tallied his third of the year. But the defense deserved a lot of credit, keeping the Huskies in the game despite Oregon State holding a 67-33 edge in possession.
DeGroot recorded his first goal of the season, getting the Huskies on the board in the seventh minute. After a hard foul on Gio Miglietti about 35 yards from goal on the near side, Ethan Bartlow took the kick and sent it right at the goal mouth where DeGroot and Miglietti broke through unmarked. It was DeGroot who ended up getting a head on the ball and sending it into the goal to put the Huskies up 1-0.
Washington would add an insurance tally early in the second half thanks to some great high pressure from the forwards. Lucas Meek pressured an OSU defender into a turnover just inside the box on the left side. He quickly turned toward goal drawing the keeper out before sliding a quick pass over to Townsend who rushed in from the top of the box. He finished with a nice shot over a lone Beaver defender to make it 2-0 in the 55th minute.
Oregon State kept pressing which allowed the Huskies a few chances to get another goal late. One great chance came in the 80th minute as some quick passing off an OSU turnover found Blake Bodily alone on a breakaway chance. But a Beaver defender pulled him down from behind, earning a red card and giving the Huskies a free kick, which would sail just high.
But OSU finally broke through, netting a goal in the 86th minute off a nice cross, but would get no closer over the final four minutes.
The goal snapped the Huskies' home scoreless streak at 535 minutes and was the first goal allowed since the first minute of the season opener. It was also the first goal allowed by freshman netminder Sam Fowler, who started his career with five-straight shutouts. He did pick up the win, however, improving to 6-0-0 on the season.
"It really was a tale of two halves out there today," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "Even though we were leading in the first half, we never felt comfortable. In the second half, we were very brave and turned the tables. They are a very good team and they move the ball well, so if you let them get into a rhythm, they will make you suffer. Although we suffered, I felt we bent, but did not break."
Washington starts conference play with a 5-0-0 record for the first time since joining the Pac-12 in 2000. It's also the best conference start in program history since the Huskies went a perfect 7-0-0 in the final year of their time in the MPSF in 1999.
Washington returns to action with a midweek, non-conference matchup against in-state foe Gonzaga on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
