October 15, 2019 | Men's Soccer
No. 2 Washington (11-1-0, 5-0-0 Pac-12) looks to extend its seven-match winning streak this week, hosting Gonzaga (1-7-1, 0-1-0 WCC) in a non-conference match up on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The match is on the Pac-12 Network with links to live stats available on gohuskies.com.
Quick Strikes
The Gonzaga Bulldogs At A Glance
The Bulldogs have really struggled this year, winning just one game thus far and posting a 1-7-1 record through nine matches. Gonzaga has scored about a goal per match on average, only being shut out three times. However, the defense has allowed 15 goals on the year with the Bulldogs' lone win also serving as their lone shutout. Of note, Wednesday's match will be eighth road match of the season for the Zags who play just five home matches this year.
Series History vs. Gonzaga
Washington has dominated the all-time series with Gonzaga, holding a 30-1-1 advantage against their in-state rivals. In addition, the Huskies are a perfect 17-0-0 against the Bulldogs in Seattle, outscoring Gonzaga 56-5 in those matches. Washington has won the last 10 matches in the series since Gonzaga won 2-1 in Spokane in 2007.
Last year, the Huskies cruised to a 3-0 win in Spokane with Joey Parish scoring the first goal and Scott Menzies adding a pair. UW out shot the Zags 23-4 with a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.
Shutout Central
The Huskies have posted eight shutouts through 11 matches this season, which is tied for the second-most shutouts and for the third-best shutout percentage (.727) in the NCAA. In addition, UW ranks seventh in team goals against average at 0.49. Dating back to last season, the Huskies have cleansheets in 13 of their last 17 matches recording an impressive 0.35 goals against average over that stretch (six goals in 1,565 minutes).
Meek's STILL A Goal-Scoring Machine!
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Meek continues his impressive offensive run, leading the Huskies with six goals on the season despite playing in just 307 minutes over 10 matches. In addition, five of those goals have been match-winners, which is tied for the NCAA lead in that category. Meek added to both totals with an incredible diving header in the second overtime at #7 Stanford to help the Huskies pull off the upset.
Meek redshirted his first year, played three minutes at the end of one match last year as a freshman, and was down on the depth chart to start the year this season. Meek's first action in 2019 came in mop-up time in a 4-0 win over San Francisco. He came on in the 41st minute at No. 16 Michigan State, then scored two minutes later and didn't play again in the second half. He did not play at Michigan, but then came in late in the match at CSUN and scored UW's only goal in the 80th minute. Meek scored at Seattle, at home vs San Diego State and just 47 seconds into the match against UCLA. He didn't score against Portland which snapped a five-match goal scoring streak.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington continues to find success when scoring the first goal of the match. Going back to last season, the Huskies are 22-1-0 when scoring the match's first goal with the lone loss coming in a double OT defeat vs Stanford last year. This year, UW is 10-0-0 when scoring first.
Spread The Wealth
The Huskies have scored 25 goals in 12 matches thus far with 11 different players finding the back of the net. Lucas Meek leads the team with six with Blake Bodily adding four. Meanwhile, 15 different players have tallied a point so far.
That Offense!
Washington's offense has been clicking on all cylinders through much of the season, scoring 25 goals in 12 matches to lead the Pac-12 and rank 22th in the NCAA in total goals. The Huskies also rank 17th nationally in total assists (25), 21st in total points (75) and 24th in scoring offense (2.08 goals per game).
Home Bodies
The Huskies have been incredible at home this season, posting a perfect 6-0-0 record and outscoring opponents 16-2. Dating back to last season, the Huskies are 10-0-1 in their last 11 home matches, allowing just two goal over that stretch of 1010 minutes. Washington's 11-match home unbeaten streak is its longest since a 13-match streak (11-0-2) beginning in 2012 and running through the 2013 season.
Going Streaking!
Washington has just one loss in its last 17 matches (15-1-1) dating back to last season. That matches the most wins over a 17-match stretch since the Huskies went 15-1-1 during the 1996 season. In addition, Washington's seven-match winning streak matches its longest streak since 2014. The Huskies last won eight-straight matches to open the 2006 season.
Fowler in Goal
Freshman goalie Sam Fowler extended his win streak to open his career, picking up the victory over Oregon State on Sunday to improve to 6-0-0. While his scoreless streak came to an end at 536 minutes when the Beavers found the back of the net late in the contest, Fowler holds a remarkable 0.17 goal against average. That mark would lead the NCAA except that he is seven minutes played shy of meeting the NCAA minimums of 50% of the teams total minutes.
Fowler earned his first college start in UW's 4-0 victory over San Francisco, becoming just the second freshman to make a start in goal for the Huskies since 2002. The only other during that stretch was Spencer Richey (2010)–the starting GK for FC Cincinnati (MLS)–who had six shutouts his first year at UW.
Bodily Named CSN National Player of the Week
Junior Blake Bodily had a fantastic trip to the Bay area, assisting on the golden goal at Stanford before scoring the lone goal in Washington's win at California. For that, he was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week for the week ending October 6.
Bodily was been solid all season, recording a point in seven of the nine matches he has played, amassing four goals and four assists on the season. Bodily has earned Pac-12 First Team recognition each of the two seasons he has played after being named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2017. He is also on the MAC Hermann Trophy watchlist, which is awarded to the best collegiate player in the country.
Bodily Rakes In The Pre-Season Honors
Bodily was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list to start the year (awarded to the top college soccer player), becoming the first Husky since Cristian Roldan to earn that honor. In addition, Bodily was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and earned preseason All-America honors from Top Drawer Soccer (3rd Team) and College Soccer News (2nd Team).
Clark Nears Win #150
UW Head Coach Jamie Clark is just one win shy of 150 career victories, heading into Wednesday's match with 149 in his career. In 13 seasons, Clark is 149-58-23 (.698 winning percentage), with this year being the 12th season with double-digit victories. Entering the year, Clark's .686 career winning percentage was tied for the eighth-best among active NCAA DI coaches and 40th among DI coaches all-time.
Earlier this year, Clark picked up his 100th win at UW as the Huskies beat No. 18 Denver 2-1. With the victory he becomes the third coach in program history with at least 100 wins (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105). He is currently second on the UW wins list with 109.
