Pair Of Five-Run Innings Carry Huskies To 10-7 Win Over Aggies
May 13, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE β Washington scored five runs in the first and five more in the fifth to down offensive-minded New Mexico State, 10-7, Monday night at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Joe Wainhouse drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, and Dylan Lamb provided a huge spark for the Huskies (28-19) out of the bullpen, holding down the visiting Aggies (36-13) in 3 2/3 of stellarΒ Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β relief work.
Β
The win capped a 5-0 home stand for the Huskies and improved them to 11-2 over the last 13 games. The Huskies also finished the regular season 7-1 in midweek games.
Β
New Mexico State entered the game with the nation's top offense, sporting a .366 team average and leading the nation with 564 runs. Out of the gate they looked the part as the Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Β
The visitors had a one-out double and then three-straight walks to force in a run. Leo Nierenberg came in from the bullpen and got out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and pop up, which proved key in keeping his team close.
Β
The Huskies would answer the Aggies' run with five of their own in the opening frame. Braiden Ward doubled to start the first, setting the stage for the Huskies' big inning. Ramon Bramasco tied things up with an RBI single that scored Ward. Wainhouse followed with a three-run, opposite field home run to give UW a 4-1 advantage. He took the first offering from Aggies' starter Aldo Fernandez and lifted it into the visiting bullpen for his 10th home run of the year.
Β
The Huskies weren't done in the first as Michael Petrie reached on a two-base throwing error by the third baseman, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Rollie Nichols sacrifice fly that made the score 5-1.
Β
New Mexico State scored in the second to make it a 5-2 game and would tie it in the fourth with three more runs.
Β
UW would break the game back open in the fifth with their second five-run outburst. Wainhouse doubled home Bramasco to give UW a 6-5 lead. The Huskies would tack on two more via a Ward double and get runs when both Ben Baird and Nick Kahle were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
Β
Meanwhile, Lamb (1-0) cruised through the Aggies' lineup, retiring 11 in a row after hitting the first batter he faced in the fourth inning. He didn't allow a hit until back-to-back singles to start the eighth, where the Aggies would get a run back to cut the Huskies' lead to 10-6. But Jack Enger was able to keep the score right there by getting an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play with runners on the corners.
Β
The Aggies would score a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but Enger would strike out Tristan Peterson to end the game.
Β
UW was held to seven hits with Wainhouse (2-for-4), Bramasco (2-for-4) and Ward (2-for-5) accounting for six of them.
Β
The Huskies return to Pac-12 action this weekend in Los Angeles against No. 1 UCLA. Game one is Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and will be telecast on the Pac-12 Network.
