No. 1 UCLA Takes Finale Against UW
May 19, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES β No. 1 UCLA looked the part of the top-ranked team as they completed a sweep of Washington with a 14-2 win Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Β
The Bruins (45-8, 22-5 Pac-12) entered the weekend as the nation's only team ranking in the top-10 in both pitching and fielding. While they were once again impressive in both categories during the three-game series, it was UCLA's offense that proved to be too much on Sunday for the Huskies, who dropped to 28-22 on the season and 12-15 in Pac-12 play.
Β
UCLA pounded out 16 hits on the day β including six home runs β to remind the rest of the college baseball world that they are more than a two-trick pony. Ryan Kreidler and Jeremy Ydens both had two home runs and combined to drive in nine runs to pace the Bruins' offense.
Β
The day got off to an inauspicious start after an hour rain delay, but the Bruins didn't let the weather ruin their senior day. They put up a five spot in the first inning to set the tone for the day.
Β
After Josh Burgmann (4-6) struck out Garrett Mitchell to start the first, Kreidler sent Burgmann's first pitch well over the fence in left-center field for a quick 1-0 lead. The Bruins would tack on four more unearned runs β the big blows coming after two outs with a Jack Stonach run-scoring single and a Ydens three-run bomb.
Β
The Huskies did not roll over as they began chipping away at the deficit with two runs of their own in the second. Joe Wainhouse and Colton Cassinelli picked up back-to-back RBI singles off UCLA starter Jesse Bergin to send him to the showers after just eight hitters.
Β
They would bring the tying run to the plate in the inning, but after a flyout, it would mark the closest the Huskies would get to climbing back into the game.
Β
UCLA would score twice in the fourth and two more in the fifth with Mitchell having his hands in dishing out all the damage. In the fourth, he hit an RBI triple and would score a run and an inning later he smashed a two-run home run to give his squad a 9-2 advantage.
Β
The Bruins continued to post crooked numbers, scoring three in the seventh thanks to a two-run shot by Kreidler and a solo home run from Michael Toglia. They would get two more in the eighth on Ydens' two-run shot.
Β
While their offense was humming, UCLA's bullpen kept the Huskies at bay to continue an impressive stretch. They entered Sunday having thrown seven shutout innings over the first two games and they would add eight more scoreless innings on Sunday.
Β
In all, the Huskies had seven hits, led by Braiden Ward's 2-for-4 day.
Β
The Huskies close out the regular season next weekend in Seattle by hosting California, starting on Thursday. Friday night is Bark at the Park and Saturday is Little League Day and senior day will be celebrated.
