SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies (28-22, 12-15 Pac-12) wrap up the regular season by hosting a hot Cal Bears (30-18, 15-11) baseball team that is 9-1 over their last 10 games.
The teams will start their three-game series on Thursday and conclude on Saturday. Friday is Bark in the Park, while Saturday is Little League Day and Senior Day.
UW's post-season outlook is cloudy right now as their RPI is 57 and they can get to .500 in Pac-12 play with a sweep of the Bears. They are 7-5 against teams in the RPI range of 51-100 and 18-1 against teams in ranked 101 or higher, but the Dawgs have a 3-16 mark against top-50 RPI team. Cal enters the week boasting a RPI of 34 and should be secure in their post-season hopes.
This weekend's action will by carried by the Pac-12 Network with Jim Watson and Donny Marbut providing the commentary. SERIES HISTORY VS. CAL
Cal leads the all-time series over Washington 49-38. Cal won the series in 2018, taking the first two games β 11-7 and 5-2 β before the Huskies rallied to win the finale 4-3 in 10 innings. Last time in Seattle, the Huskies won two of three games. Cal's last series win in Seattle was 2015 when they swept the Huskies. Lindsey Meggs is 10-17 against the Bears since he took over as Huskies' head coach, but has won three of the last five series between the teams. The two teams first met over 100 years ago in 1911, where Washington picked up the first three wins of the all-time series. Β
NOTEWORTHY
β’ Senior Sendoff: The Huskies will honor four graduating senior players -- Blake Burton, Mason Cerrillo, Adam Davenport and Joe Wainhouse -- plus student manager, Jacob Hatloe, prior to Saturday's game.
β’ Keeping Pace With 2018: Last year through 50 games in 2018 the Huskies had the exact same record they have right now: 28-22. The big difference, they were 18-9 in Pac-12 play...and a lot healthier.
β’ Injury Bug Bites: In Sunday's series finale at UCLA, the Huskies had players that entered the year as backup catchers playing right and left field. Their starting centerfielder was playing second base and their Friday night pitcher was the designated hitter. The Huskies have been without several players projected to be key contributed due to injuries, including: Christian Jones (hand surgery), Noah Hsue (torn ACL), Jonathan Schiffer (2 concussions), Connor Blair (broken wrist) and Kaiser Weiss (hamate bone surgery).
β’ Kahle Walks Into UW History: Nick Kahle became the team's all-time single-season leader in walk last week and is at 59 for the season. His total would be the most by a Pac-12 player since ASU's Kole Calhoun (64) in 2010, except OSU's Adley Rutschman has 69 this year!Β
β’ Jones Top-10: Jordan Jones is on several UW career top-10 lists, ranking 7th all-time with 201 strikeouts, 6th in starts (42) and 8th in innings pitched (262.2). The lists are on Pg. 3 of the notes. He is the sixth player in UW history to go 200/200 in both strikeouts and innings pitched.
β’ Ward - Man Of Steal: Braiden Ward currently leads the Conference in stolen bases with 24, a year after leading with 19 in 2018. He is trying to become the first Pac-12 player to lead in consecutive years since Arizona's T.J. Steele in 2007-08. The last Husky to lead in consecutive years was Chris Magruder (1997-98).
β’ Team Strikeout Rankings: UW pitchers have recorded 478 strikeouts this season, the SECOND most in UW single-season history. The team record is 498 in 2004.
β’ 50K Note: The Huskies and UCLA are the only teams in the Pac-12 that have five pitchers who have recorded 50 or more strikeouts. It is the first time in UW Baseball history that they have EVER had five pitchers record 50 or more K's. All five Huskies rank in the Pac-12's top-25: Josh Burgmann (101, 2nd), Chris Micheles (74, T8th), Jordan Jones (71, 12th), Stevie Emanuels (62, 20th) and Jack Enger (61, 23rd). David Rhodes has 45 and could join the list.
β’ Academic Recognition: Senior Mason Cerrillo was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team. He boasts a 3.69 GPA and is majoring in public health and environmental science.Β
β’ Approaching 2,000 wins: The 2019 season is the 119th year of Husky Baseball. The Huskies entered the year needing 32 wins to reach 2,000 in program history, so they're four shy of reaching the milestone.
β’ 'House Homers: Joe Wainhouse is the first Husky with 10+ homers in back-to-back season since Kyle Conley (19 in 2009 and 2008), who is also UW's all-time career leader with 42. 'House has 29 total to rank 8th all-time on the UW top-10 list (7th, 30 by Kevin Miller).
β’ Kahle Starting Streak: On April 30, catcher Nick Kahle made his 100th consecutive start. He has started 111 games straight - 106 times at catcher, four times at designated hitter and twice in left field. Β
β’ Non-Stop Shortstop: Ramon Bramasco has played all but three innings of all 50 games this season -- all at shortstop. Bramasco has only been replaced in two games all season.
β’ Starter Wins: All three Husky starters picked up victories during the team's sweep of Utah. Prior to that, UW starters had only one win since March 23 β Jordan Jones May 4 at WSU β a span of 23 games.
β’ Experienced Pen: Β The Huskies definitely have some experience in the bullpen with three relievers having made 50 or more appearances in their careers: Chris Micheles (67), Stevie Emanuels (64) and Leo Nierenberg (59). Micheles is the first to crack to UW career top-10 list (see page 3) with the other two well on their way.
β’ Ain't No Bull From The Pen: The UW bullpen has been lights out in 2019. They have combined for a 16-6 record with a 3.96 ERA, recording 247 strikeouts in 193.1 IP for a 11.5 K/9 average.Β
