Washington Completes Four-Game Sweep of Northern Colorado
March 05, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Huskies completed a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado (2-8) on Sunday, capping the series with a 10-4 victory at the Diamond on Montlake.
Calvin Kirchoff received his first win of the season in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with just one runner allowed on a walk. Gianluca Shinn and Case Matter also had scoreless outings out of the bullpen, with Matter striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
After a quick top of the first, the Washington (9-2) offense went right to work in the bottom half.
Cam Clayton took the first pitch to dead center for a leadoff double. Will Simpson followed with a sharp single and Johnny Tincher scored Clayton with a single dropped into center. Coby Morales sent an RBI single to center himself and before the first out was recorded, UW was up a pair. A ground ball double play allowed Tincher to come home, making it 3-0 after one.
Tincher added on two more in the second, flaring a soft single into center to scratch across Sam DeCarlo and Clayton and put the Huskies up 5-0.
Northern Colorado cut the lead down to two in the third, scoring three on an RBI single and a two-run homer. However, Simpson got two of those runs right back with a big fly of his own, hammering a pitch 392 feet the other way.
The Huskies put together a three run seventh inning to expand the lead back out to seven at 10-3, highlighted by a DeCarlo RBI single through the left side.
UNC took advantage of a game-extending error to pull one back in the ninth but it was too little, too late as Washington finished off the sweep.
