
Huskies Sweep Doubleheader

SEATTLE – No. 4 Washington picked up a pair of wins in its home opener over Maryland on Thursday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies run-ruled the Terps in game one 8-0 in five innings before completing a comeback in game two, 8-6.
Washington is 14-2 overall on the season.
GAME ONE - MARYLAND 0, #4 WASHINGTON 8 (5)
After a quiet first inning, the bats came alive plating seven runs on four hits in the second. With one out, Kinsey Fiedler doubled then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brooke Nelson walked to put a pair of runners on. With Sydney Stewart up to bat Fiedler stole home to bring in the first run. Three walks in a row plated the second run. With Brooklyn Carter reaching on a fielder's choice, Jillian Celis hit her seventh double of the season to drive in two more and Rylee Holtorf followed with her third career triple to cap for two more runs to cap off the seven-run inning.
Back-to-back hits by Carter and Celis put runners at second and third for Holtorf who hit a sacrifice fly to put the run-rule into effect.
Ruby Meylan (6-1) got the start, going the distance to pick up her sixth win. She struck out six with one walk and three hits allowed. The game was the third shutout this season for Meylan and fifth complete game.
GAME TWO – MARYLAND 6, #4 WASHINGTON 8
Maryland opened game two plating six runs in the first.
The Huskies chipped away, bring in their first run on a bases loaded walk to Jadyn Glab. A home run by Sydney Stewart in the fourth made it a 6-2 game.
Down to their final three outs, Jillian Celis led off with a home run, cutting the lead to three. Rylee Holtorf followed with her second triple of the day. Alana Johnson drove her in with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Brooke Nelson put runners at second and third with one out. Sydney Stewart was intentionally walked to load the bases for Olivia Johnson.
O. Johnson smashed her first career grand slam for the walkoff win to complete the comeback for the 8-6 victory over Maryland.
Nelson (3-0) got the win after coming in relief in the seventh. Sidne Peters threw 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts and no hits allowed with one walk.
Up next, the Huskies will travel down to Eugene for two games against Mount St. Mary's as part of the Jane Sanders Classic. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
