Washington Clinches Apple Cup With 11-5 Win Over Washington State
March 30, 2024 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Washington secured its third straight Boeing Apple Cup Series win over Washington State on Saturday, outpacing the Cougars 11-5 at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Starter Spencer Dessart picked up the win with five innings of work, while Gianluca Shinn, Reilly McAdams and Grant Cunningham teamed to finish the final four frames.
Β
The middle of the Husky lineup got things started in the second, with Sam DeCarlo tagging a double to right-center, bringing around AJ Guerrero and Cooper Whitton.
Β
WSU cut the deficit in half in the fourth but the Huskies responded immediately with four runs in the home half to break things back open. DeCarlo came through once again, yanking a double to left and scoring Guerrero for the second time in as many at-bats.
Β
Colton Bower followed with a walk to put two men on and Aiva Arquette cleared the bases, driving a three-run shot the other way. Just like that the lead had expanded to 7-1.
Β
The Cougars plated two in the fifth but the Dawgs answered with a run of their own on Jeter Ybarra's RBI single in their half, pushing the score to 8-3.
Β
WSU pulled within three and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but head coach Jason Kelly brought on McAdams out of the 'pen to get the Huskies out of trouble and he did just that, inducing a ground ball to third to escape the jam.
Β
The Huskies then put things away for good in their half of the seventh. Washington scored four runs in the frame, all without the benefit of a hit, plating runs on a dropped throw at home, a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.
Β
By inning's end the Huskies were firmly in charge at 11-4, and while the Cougars managed to scap a run back in the eighth it was all academic.
Β
The Huskies will finish up their four-game homestand with their first midweek game of the season, taking on SeattleU on Wednesday at 6:05 PM PT for Dollar Dog Night at Husky Ballpark.
