SEATTLE -- Coming off its highest-ranked road win in seven years, the Husky volleyball team starts a huge four-match homestand with Iowa and Maryland this weekend at Alaska Airlines Arena. Seven matches remain in the regular season, and the 20th-ranked Dawgs (15-4, 6-4 Big Ten) continue to look to add wins to their NCAA postseason résumé. They host the Hawkeyes on Friday night, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., and then start November with the Terrapins on Sunday afternoon at 12 noon. Friday's match will be streamed via Big Ten Plus, while Sunday's will be televised on Big Ten Network.
Weekend promotions include trick or treating around the Hec Ed concourse on Friday night between 6-7 p.m., featuring the Husky men's and women's basketball teams. Friday will also be a Black Out "Twilight" theme to tie in with spooky season. Fans are encouraged to wear black to match the Husky jerseys that night, and the first 250 fans will receive special Black Out themed t-shirts. Sunday will be the Dubs Club match with pre-game photos with Dubs and postmatch autographs with the team.
Last Friday night, Washington upset 6th-ranked Wisconsin behind a marvelous 31-kill effort from second-year Simona Mateska. It was UW's road win over a Top-10 team since 2019 when it upset No. 1 Stanford in the Bay Area. Mateska's 31 kills were the most by a Husky since assistant coach Krista Hendrickson had 38 in the 2013 NCAA Elite Eight. It ties for third-most by a Husky in the 25-point set era that started in 2008. Not only was Mateska deadly, she was deadly efficient, getting those 31 kills on 59 swings and hitting .424. She was named to the NCAA Rotation of the Week this week.
Fourth-year middle blocker Katy Wessels also achieved the 400 career block milestone on Sunday in a loss at No. 20 Minnesota. Wessels is the 11th Husky to reach 400 career blocks and she needs 14 more blocks to enter the Husky career top-10.
Washington is now 14th in the NCAA RPI and moved up one spot in the AVCA rankings this week from 21st to 20th after the 1-1 road trip. The Dawgs have split each of the past four weekends, going 1-1 each time whether home or away. They have not lost consecutive matches all season but have not won two in a row since Oct. 4 and Oct. 9 vs. Purdue and Ohio State. But crucially the Huskies are now 2-0 this year against Top-10 opponents.
Iowa is 2-8 in conference and 13-11 on the season but coming off its biggest win of the season, after a 3-2 upset over a ranked UCLA squad last Saturday. In that match, Iowa had four different players with 14+ kills, led by the 20 of Rosa Vesty. Hannah Whittingstall had 15 kills without an error to hit .536, and Jenna Metzler had 52 assists and 11 digs with 4 blocks. In conference play, Iowa ranks ninth with a .241 attack percentage, but 17th in opponent attack percentage at .317. Vesta is averaging 2.93 kills per set in conference play, while Whittingstall is at 2.49 and hitting .366, also leading the team with 15 aces. Meitzler ranks 10th in the league with 9.98 assists per set.
Maryland is 12-9 overall and also 2-8 in conference, with its two wins coming over Iowa in five sets on Oct. 1, and over Northwestern in five sets on Oct. 10. Last week Maryland nearly pulled the upset over Illinois but fell in five. In the ten Big Ten matches thus far, UM is hitting .200 and its opponents are at .305. Brooklynne Brass is averaging 2.73 kills per set, and Ava Brown is at 2.63 per set. Eva Rohrbach is at 2.34 kills per set and hitting the highest percentage at .309.
