Huskies Run Rule Twice On First Day In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 24 Husky softball team (12-6, 0-0 Big Ten) run ruled twice on the opening day in San Diego, defeating San Diego State and Cal Poly in five innings apiece.
The Huskies first defeated San Diego State 16-2 before taking down Cal Poly 8-0.
Game 1 – No. 24 Washington vs. San Diego State
Game one of the opening day in San Diego was all offense for the Huskies, who defeated San Diego State 16-2 in five innings.
On the second pitch of the game, leadoff Jadyn Glab, who finished the game with a career-high five RBI, hit a home run to put the Huskies on the board immediately.
Alexis DeBoer hit a single to left center field before Giselle Alvarez stepped up and followed suit, notching a two-RBI home run to extend the early UW lead to three.
Ava Carroll walked and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch before Jade Bubke recorded her first hit of the day, a double down the left field line to score Carroll.
The Dawgs turned a double play and forced a ground out to end the first inning scoreless for the Aztecs.
Kaycie Burdick, who recorded three hits in the game, notched her first with a double down the right field line in the top of the second. Glab walked and then advanced to second on a passed ball that scored Burdick.
Glab then scored her second run of the game to put the Huskies up 6-0 two innings in.
Back-to-back walks by Gabi Toney and Bubke in the top of the third put two on base before Burdick singled to load the bases.
Glab walked to first to help walk in a run. DeBoer then registered a single to notch two RBI, scoring Bubke and Burdick.
San Diego State hit a two RBI home run in the bottom of the third but that was it for the Aztec scoring.
The Dawgs blew things wide open in the top of the fifth, notching seven runs to score their second most runs of the season (16).
The scoring started with a walk by Melody Acevedo, then Burdick's third hit of the day in the form of a single.
Glab smashed her second homer of the day to score three more UW runs.
DeBoer, Marley Teasley and Carroll walked to load the bases, followed by a five-pitch walk for Sophi Mazzola to bring home Jing Gardner, who pitch ran for DeBoer.
With the bases loaded once again, a wild pitch scored Teasley.
Acevedo sealed the deal with a two-RBI double to left field to bring in the 15th and 16th runs for Washington.
Morgan Reimer recorded five strikeouts in her fifth win of the season.
Game 2 – No. 24 Washington vs. Cal Poly
After run ruling San Diego State a few hours prior, the Huskies continued their offensive dominance, in particular late in the game.
One Husky run game in the second, a single by Mazzola that scored Carroll, but the rest came in the top of the seventh to secure the run rule victory.
A Cal Poly wild pitch allowed Burdick to score, then DeBoer reached first on a fielder's choice that brought home Glab.
Gardner stepped in to pinch run and scored off a Carroll single up the middle, extending the Washington lead to 4-0.
A two-RBI double by Acevedo scored Bubke and Carroll to add two more runs to the Husky scoreboard.
Burdick then notched a double, her second hit of the game, to bring home Acevedo and Tia Durst to seal the eight-run lead.
The Mustangs couldn't convert anything in the bottom of the fifth. Sophia Ramuno gave up just one hit in five innings against her former team and recorded six strikeouts.
The Huskies play two more tomorrow at Reggie Smith Softball Complex, facing CSUN at 9 a.m. and San Diego State again at 11:30 a.m.
