BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Huskies used a big offensive output to earn the win on Saturday, taking down Indiana 9-2. Washington moves to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play on the year.
While the bats were the highlight from Saturday's win, the pitching was just as decisive. Jackson Thomas turned in a seven-inning outing to power the Huskies to victory.
The right-hander earned his first win of the season in the game, allowing just one run and zero earned runs. He surrendered just three hits and zero walks while striking out three batters.
Indiana scored in the first inning, but Washington responded right away in the second to take a 2-1 advantage and held onto the lead for the rest of the game.
Washington was led by Daniel Porras with three hits in five at bats. Porras launched his third home run of the season in the ninth inning to go along with a double and a single in the game.
Sam DeCarlo and Ty Cowan each collected two hits as well. DeCarlo recorded his first triple of the season in the ninth inning,
In total, Washington had 11 hits in the game including the first Husky hit for Landon Young. After coming on as a defensive replacement at third base, the redshirt freshman made his presence felt on both sides of the ball.
Young made multiple impressive plays on the hot corner, including a barehanded throw to first base and a diving stop to record an out. On offense, Young recorded his first Husky hit and RBI, contributing to Washington's three-run sixth inning.
Bryce Johnson took the mound to see out the game, throwing the final two frames. He allowed two hits and one run while striking out a batter to wrap up the contest.
The Huskies will look to take the series on Sunday in game three. Gunnar Nichols will take the mound in the rubber match, set for a 9:00 a.m. PT first pitch.
