SEATTLE – Two Huskies kicked off a busy four day stretch for UW Track in SoCal, competing in nine events between the two of them at the Mt. SAC Relays. Sofia Cosculluela and Teko Cates both had impressive first days of their respective heptathlon and decathlon competitions.
Cosculluela, an NCAA podium finisher in the heptathlon last season, had her best day one as a Dawg. In the first event, she ran a strong time of 13.48 seconds, just off her PR of 13.41 from two weeks back. She followed that with a season-best high jump of 5-5.
The native of Madrid, Spain then had back-to-back PRs in the shot put and 200-meters. Her best shot put today went 45-feet, 10.75-inches, nearly three feet beyond her old best. She then broke 24-seconds in the 200m for the first time, going 23.84, which is good for the No. 6 mark in school history.
Through four of the seven events, Cosculluela is fifth overall and first among collegiate competitors with 3,637 points.
Cates, the redshirt freshman from Springdale, Wash., started his first collegiate decathlon with a 100-meter dash time of 10.78 seconds. He moved on to the long jump and had a best leap of 23-11 1/2. Next came the shot put, with a mark of 43-2 1/2. Cates tied for the win in the high jump with a make of 6-9 3/4, and he closed out day one with a 400-meters time of 50.51.
Cates sits third overall and is also the top collegiate competitor with a day one total of 4,143 points.
Day two will start at 10 a.m. with the long jump for the heptathlon, while the decathlon 110m hurdles starts at 11:30 a.m. Washington will also have athletes in action tomorrow at the Bryan Clay Invite, in the steeplechase and 10,000-meters races.
