Washington Splits Doubleheader With Penn State On Friday
May 08, 2026 | Baseball
The Huskies move to 22-28 and 11-15 in Big Ten play.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one and held the one-run advantage for 4.5 innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Nittany Lions scored on a two-run home run to jump in front, 2-1.
The Huskies scored on a groundout in the seventh to tie the game before Ethan Swidler tagged a three-run home run in the eighth to put the Dawgs back in the lead. It would be just enough for the Huskies to absorb another two-run home run from Penn State in the bottom half of that inning.
The Huskies hung on to secure a 5-4 win in the series opener, thanks in large part to 6.0 innings of work from Jackson Thomas and Swidler's three-run blast.
Colton Bower saw his first action since April 11, batting as the designated hitter. He started the day 2-2 with two doubles.
Six of Washington's nine hits were for extra bases, including Washington's 17th triple, Braeden Terry's team-leading fourth three-bagger of the year.
Tommy Brandenburg was credited with the win while Carson Boesel earned his first save of the year.
In game two, Washington again scored in the first inning, but Penn State answered in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game at one. Penn State added two in the third and two in the fourth to jump in front 5-1.
Jackson Hotchkiss brought the Huskies back within striking distance in the fifth. He blasted his 18th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 5-3.
Hotchkiss is now tied for No. 7 all-time in the Husky record book for home runs in a season. His 18 bombs are tied with Will Simpson (2023) for the most home runs in a season since Joe Wainhouse hit 19 (2018).
The Huskies plated another on a sacrifice fly from Terry in the sixth, but couldn't find the tying run. In the end, Penn State would score one more and tie the series with a 6-4 win.
Washington has recorded at least one home run in 16 of the last 18 games. The Huskies have also scored in the first inning in six of the last seven games.
The Huskies will look to take the series on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. PT.
